This paper discusses the facilities made available in TISS under the UGC-Infonet programme. Also, in-house databases developed using Winisis software has been explained. People are spending time for many purposes and academic activities among these uses of web 2.0 social media services by users are prominent for searching, sharing, discussing, and messaging of scholarly content. The wider use of social media has given birth to various buzz words and ‘altmetrics’ is one of them. In simple words, altmetrics provides online measurement of scholars or scholarly content derived from the web 2.0 social media platforms. Altmetrics is diversified in nature and categorised in five categories i.e. (i) recommended (ii) cited (iii) saved (iv) discussed and (v) viewed. Digital libraries are the most complex form of information systems that support digital document preservation, distributed database management, hypertext, filtering, information retrieval and selective dissemination of information. This has really overcome geographical barriers offering wide range of academic, research and cultural resources with multimedia effects which can be accessed around the world over the distributed netwo rks. The paper examines the concept of Digital library, the technology that has enabled its emergence and its architecture. It also highlights the digital library projects undertaken in USA, UK and India. Here the authors explore the unique features of digital library and possible challenges ahead for library and information professionals in the digital environment.Item ICT Facilities and Services at M. K. Tata Memorial Learning Centre forVisually Challenged(INFLIBNET Center, 2009-02-25) Angadi, Mallikarjun; Koganuramath, MuttayyaAttempts have been made to highlight the State-of-the-Art ICT facilities and services made available at M.K. Tata Memorial Learning Resource Centre which was established in 2008 at Sir Dorabji Tata Memorial Library, TISS to keep pace with time and advances in information technology. The centre is comprising of more than 20 workstations with latest configurations along with 10 HP scanners. It provides access to Internet, Dspace Archive, Braille printer, instructional learning materials and ICT based information services. Special software like JAWS, Kurzweil, Magic Magnification, Zoom- Ex Instant Reader, Win Braille, OBR, Spell Well, Talking Teaching Type Pro have been procured in the centre. Along with the changing nature of libraries, the job profile and responsibilities of the librarians or LIS Professionals have also changed manifold. In the changing times it has become necessary for the librarians to equip themselves with the upcoming and reigning technologies to remain relevant and to provide the required service to their potential users as well as actual users. This paper attempts to portray the various aspects of Web 3.0 and semantic web technologies and describes the changing role of the LIS professional in the present scenario.
