Item Digitization at Gandhi Smriti Library of Lbsnaa: An Initiative to Preserve the Rare Books(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Bist, Rajender SinghManuscripts provide rich, authentic information, facts and evidence for historical, legal and research references. Physical condition of the manuscripts may be decayed due to factors such as climate, insects, acidified paper and old age. A core function of libraries is to maintain and preserve the decaying/ damaged manuscripts for the present as well as use of the future generation. The most significant development in the recent times is to digitize the fragile and rare documents for better access, storage, preservation and dissemination. Digitization is an important aspect of developing digital libraries as it opens up new avenues of access, use, research and preservation of valued information resources. This paper deals with the key issues of digitization at the Gandhi Smriti Library of LBSNAA, which have started digitizing its rare collection with the aim of providing the cost-effective technical solutions for efficient development and delivery of digital services to provide enhanced access to the Library’s collections and other documentary resources, and also to provide shared access to digital collections in cooperation with other institutions. Further, it strives to provide the infrastructure for long-term management of digital material in the Library’s collection through provision of hardware and software systems supporting integrated collection management in a digital environment.Item ICT Enabled Development and Digital Divide : An Indian Perspective(Inflibnet centre, 2007-02-08) Bist, Rajender SinghThe direction and pace of development in ICT have led practically all world economies to recognize the improvement of ICT in catalyzing economic activity, in efficient governance, empowerment of society and bringing about major socio-economic transformations in societies. Developing countries like India, have, therefore, made significant investments in these technologies and integrated the same with the development programmes to gainfully realize the fruits of such developments to their society. However, it is realized that this development has created a divide between the ‘have’ and the ‘have-nots’ in the form of a gap between the ‘technology empowered’ and the ‘technology excluded’ communities. It is therefore catching the attention of governments the world over to device programmes to alleviate this divide, called the digital divide. This paper highlights the digital divide scenario in India, various ICT initiatives undertaken and the major challenges and key solutions in bridging the digital divide in the Indian context.Item Managing and Handling Electronic Journals : Some Issues(INFLIBNET Centre, 2005-11-10) Bist, Rajender SinghLibraries are moving rapidly towards the electronic method of storage and retrieval. Electronic journals are being added to the Library collections at exponential rates. Today ejournals offer flexibility and recent developments have enhanced the visibility of these by integrating all journal titles in any format. Individual libraries today are facing issues to make these e-journals accessible to users and consortia based subscriptions to e-journals has developed as a viable solution for increased access, with some cost savings. This calls for handling and management of e-journal subscriptions. This paper outlines some of the processes of handling and managing e-journals in individual libraries as well as Consortium.Item Open Access Movement and Open Access Initiatives in India(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Bist, Rajender Singh; Mohanty, V PatnaikOpen access is a new trend in scholarly communication which aims at providing free access to scholarly literature over the internet and has gained enormous momentum in the recent years. The open URL standard is a breakthrough for achieving the means to integrate electronic resources of the library. Open URL mechanism transports metadata of electronic resources from one resource to another and provides dynamic links from metadata to full content of the resource described by the metadata. This paper describes the concept underlying the Open URL mechanism, explains the Open URL structure and the link resolvers as the linking component for the resource integration in the libraries.
