Item DIGITISATION OF MARATHI MANUSCRIPTS(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Deshpande, N J; Panage, B MThe present paper discusses the importance of manuscript collection and the necessity to preserve it for the future research and references. It highlights on the existing precious manuscript collection of Jayakar library. The paper tries to convert document in the digital form to preserve and maintain it. More emphasis is given on conversion of Marathi manuscripts available in the Jayakar library. It also discusses various methods of capturing data and its advantages and disadvantages. The central theme of the paper is to find out, how much space is required to store one image in various file formats likebitmap, tif and jpeg, which may act as a guideline for preservation and maintenance of manuscripts.Item Digitization of Photographs(INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, 2004-02) Deshpande, N J; Panage, B MDeveloping preservation strategies for photographic materials require specific expertise on storage, environment, package materials and conservation treatments. Many digitization projects for photographs grew out of project primarily dealing with text. Digitization of photographs:- Obviously digitization is considered to be very attractive by institutions that hold photographic collections. When digital copies are available, users can browse through a collection without handling fragile materials. Creating an adequate digital representation of a (historical) photograph requires expert knowledge of imaging techniques as well as photographic processes. The present paper describes in detail the methods and procedures adopted by The ‘Collage’-project, The Public Record Office Library, Victoria and Albert Museum (UK), The British Library (UK) and Stadt- und Universitätsbibliothek Frankfurt for conservation of their photographic collection. It also highlights the unique properties of photographs and narrates the care to be taken before digitizing this material.Item Internet based Reference Service(INFLIBNET Centre, 2002-02) Deshpande, N J; Panage, B MWe are living in a digital world. The evidence is everywhere. We see digital camera, digital television, digital diary etc. around us. At the same time, information is also available in digital form at a large scale. Many publishers are publishing their publications in digital form. Some of these outstanding and valuable resources are freely available on Internet. Information seeking on Internet is very difficult. It is said that Internet is the place to find answer for a query in three days, which will require three hours in a traditional library. The present paper lists some of important resources available on Internet. The authors are using these sources to provide reference service in Pune University Library and have visited all the websites described in this paper. These websites are thoroughly studied and found that these are valuable to provide reference service.
