Item Library Technology Solutions for Smart Libraries: A Comparative Study of IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay Library System(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2019-11) Sahoo, Sambhunath; Panda, K CLibrary technology refers to those technologies which are mainly used in libraries for providing smart library services to their users, perhaps keeping in view of the implications of five laws of library science as envisaged by Dr. S. R. Ranganathan. Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) recognized as Institute of National Importance, provide higher technical education and research in India. IIT Libraries are using latest technologies to provide smart library solutions to their users. This study used survey method to collect primary data through observation technique and questionnaire tool. The study selected two IITs, i.e. IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay who got Institute of Eminence (IoE) status by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India and secured 2nd rank and 3rd rank respectively in NIRF-2019 under engineering category. Their Library plays a pivotal role in making them at the top. The main objectives of the study were to know what kinds of library technology used by IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi Library System. The study found that both the IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi Library used library technology in different areas like library automation, library website, institutional repository, remote access, web-scale discovery system (WSDS), cloud computing and Web 2.0 applications. This study suggests appropriate measures for the improvement of existing library system of IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi. Further,it may be useful to those who are doing in-depth research in the field of library technology.Item PRESERVATION OF DIGITAL INFORMATION IN LIBRARIES: ISSUES AND STRATEGIES(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Bulu, Maharana; Panda, K CThe introduction of digital technology into the process of production, distribution and storage of information has made the libraries to go digital. Libraries all around the globe have responded to various challenges posed by the preservation of digital information and have encountered the technical, organizational, resource and legal issues associated with it. Although, the libraries have been experimenting with various preservation strategies such as technology preservation, emulation, migration etc., the need for a technologically feasible, financially affordable and widely acceptable strategy for preservation is still there. The paper discusses various issues and challenges associated with digital preservation and examines different strategies of digital preservation. The paper highlights initiatives undertaken at international level to develop workable approaches and best-practice preservation strategies for digital resources in libraries.Item State of Digital Archival Repository System : A Critical Appraisal(INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, 2004-02) Mahapatra, R K; Panda, K CArchives are repositories of public records that give emphasis on long term preservation, access and use of information contained in essential records of national importance. With the changing scenario of information and communication technologies, the concept of digital method of preservation has been accepted by archives, libraries and museums. Digital archiving system is an attempt to develop an environment in which information in digital form are collected, preserved/stored and managed as an institutional assets. Latest technological developments have facilitated to preserve the archival documents in electronic form for posterity. Digital archival system can also provide services such as acquisition, organization and dissemination of archival records for research, training and administrative uses. The concept of intellectual property rights and security issues are more seen in the electronic era where digital archiving is being practiced. The paper has discussed the above facets in detail with the problems and effective measures of digital archiving.
