Item Analytical Study of Typographical Errors in OPACS and Corrective Measures(INFLIBNET Centre, 2013-03-23) Cherukodan, Surendran; Kumar, G Santhosh; Sheeja, N K; Humayoon, Kabir SThe present study is an attempt to highlight the problem of typographical errors in OPACS. The errors made while typing catalogue entries as well as importing bibliographical records from other libraries exist unnoticed by librarians resulting the non-retrieval of available records and affecting the quality of OPACs. This paper follows previous research on the topic mainly by Jeffrey Beall and Terry Ballard. The word “management” was chosen from the list of likely to be misspelled words identified by previous research. It was found that the word is wrongly entered in several forms in local, national and international OPACs justifying the observations of Ballard that typos occur in almost everywhere. Though there are lots of corrective measures proposed and are in use, the study asserts the fact that human effort is needed to get rid of the problem. The paper is also an invitation to the library professionals and system designers to construct a strategy to solve the issue.Item Impact of ICT on Library and Information Science: Major Shifts and Practices in CUSAT Central Library(Inflibnet center, 2008-02-28) Antherjanam, Santha Devi; Sheeja, N KInformation is knowledge, facts or data. For the purpose of enabling the users to assimilate information, it should be repacked. Knowledge becomes information when it is externalized i.e. put in to the process of communication. The effectiveness of communication technology depends how well it provides its clients with information rapidly, economically and authentically. A large number of ICT enabled services including OPAC; e-resources etc. are available in the university library. Studies have been done to find the impact of ICT on different sections of CUSAT library by observing the activities of different sections; discussions with colleagues and visitors; and analyzing the entries in the library records. The results of the studies are presented here in the form of a paper.Item Isp Knowledge Portal : a Resource Discovery Tool in Optics(INFLIBNET CENTER, 2007-12-07) Sheeja, N K; Surendran, CherukodanThe need to structure knowledge is as important now as it ever has been. This paper has tried to study the ISP knowledge portal to explore how knowledge on various resources and topics in photonics and related areas are organized in the knowledge portal of International School of Photonics, CUSAT. The study revealed that ISP knowledge portal is one of the best portals in the filed. It provides a model for building an effective knowledge portal in other fields.
