    Digital libraries are being built and operated by a wide variety of institutions for a wide variety of reasons. They are meant for storage, access, and retrieval repositories of digital objects (HTML, XML, PDF, Audio, Video, multimedia etc.) usually accessed via Internet or intranet. The purpose of this article is to introduce this technology development in libraries, digital collection, discuss the workflow of the Digital library, describe how it functions, problems and opportunities in digital library and present a picture of a digital library.

    Librarians Role In Dealing With Irs And Open Access

    The article presents a brief overview of Open Acess, IRs and Librarians role. Universities and other institutions can have complex motives for establishing IRs; providing free access to all IR materials is often one of them. Open access initiatives may focus on technical support costs of IRs, while librarians may also be concerned with various other problems such as staff and user training and support, IR advocacy and promotion, metadata creation and maintenance, and long-term digital preservation etc. Consequently, we can see IRs as cheap to support and quick to implement, while as librarians we can take a more cautious approach that takes in to consideration other constraints and the library maxim that it is easier to establish a new service than to stop offering one. IRs are best seen as an enabling technology for open access and as their best hope for establishing permanent repositories.

    Networking of Academic Libraries

    No system of education is complete unless it is backed by a sound and effective network of libraries. The Information explosion, complete revolution and electronic media especially in the advent of 21 st century where paperless societies and libraries are talked about and established, caused the libraries to undergo a change. Computers have made a paradigm change in reach and dissemination of information. Linking of computers with telecommunication has revolutionized the expansion of information systems. This paper is to explain the role, need and purpose of networking especially for university libraries. By means of LAN and WAN etc. The role of various networks i.e. DELNET, CALIBNET, NICNET, INFLIBNET has been given in brief. Indian initiatives and barriers to network development have been discussed in brief.

Liberal exchange of information and experiences over the internet, person – to –person communication amongst virtual communities spread over thousands of miles, distribution of products and services though this multi- transactional conduit, is converting today’s world in to a vibrant global and information village.
