It can be said that computer can serve as universal remedy for all the existing ills of libraries. Since these can be made use of for performing each and every activities of the library. This paper mainly focuses on the manpower aspects of library automation in the college libraries of Assam. The status of automation has been discussed along with library survey, library software, and library services.Item Re-engineering of Systems and Services of Selected Technical Institute Libraries in Assam: A Qualitative Study(INFLIBNET Centre, 2010-02-18) Barman, Rajani Kanta; Thakuria, Pranjit KumarThe purpose of the paper is to touch upon the basic principles and importance of re-engineering and its impact on quality management of libraries in some selected technical institutes of Assam in aspects of users’ satisfaction. Libraries have always had the ability to respond to the challenges of technology, from the printing press of the middle age to the print explosion of 20th century and to the digital ‘print’ of today. With the changing world ICT plays a dominant role in today’s library and information centers. But the academic libraries of Assam especially in technical institutions except few are lagging behind. Explains the status of re-engineering of some major libraries and their services lacuna. Suggests some remedial measures for improvement in the context of digital environment. The paper mainly discusses about the concept and the birth of VL. Emphasis has been given to the planning and management of VL which includes planning, mission and scope, time frame, infrastructures required, evaluation and assessment, etc. The paper focuses on the management and funding and also describes the influence of internet on VL along with user awareness and reference service. Some light has been thrown on the commercial consortia which provides the concept of e-journals, J-Gate, ACM portal, etc.
