Nowadays, electronic resources, networks and the World Wide Web represent a large portion of the library services. The librarians must manage staff, information in several supports, and technical activities to produce quality services. Quality services means resources and services, which satisfy users’ expectations and perceptions. It is very clear that librarians must use management tools to run the library services. These tools such as TQM, SERVQUAL, LibQUAL help them to assess services, to make decisions, to improve services and to achieve a better quality. The networked environment offers libraries’ challenges and opportunities in a number of areas including management, services, and collection development. It is all about reengineering of library services in the light of re-evaluating of user needs and the opportunities produced by new technologies. The paper states about web 2.0 applications in knowledge management and regarding mindset of information seekers. There is no doubt that Libraries are struggling to cope with the changing scenario in perspective of current innovations and provide services that skillfully make use of the current information technology. The opportunities that have been created by web 2.0 for the information professionals at the wake of semantic web technologies.Item Re-engineering of Systems and Services of Selected Technical Institute Libraries in Assam: A Qualitative Study(INFLIBNET Centre, 2010-02-18) Barman, Rajani Kanta; Thakuria, Pranjit KumarThe purpose of the paper is to touch upon the basic principles and importance of re-engineering and its impact on quality management of libraries in some selected technical institutes of Assam in aspects of users’ satisfaction. Libraries have always had the ability to respond to the challenges of technology, from the printing press of the middle age to the print explosion of 20th century and to the digital ‘print’ of today. With the changing world ICT plays a dominant role in today’s library and information centers. But the academic libraries of Assam especially in technical institutions except few are lagging behind. Explains the status of re-engineering of some major libraries and their services lacuna. Suggests some remedial measures for improvement in the context of digital environment. The paper provides ideas how a quality system can be established through re-engineering of library setup and services.
