Item Automation Scenario in Academic Libraries of Bihar and Jharkhand(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Mishra, ParasnathThe history of education and the scholars produced by Bihar is well known to the world. The patliputra was the ancient capital of India during Ashoka Dynasty. The well-known libraries, i.e. Nalanda and Vikramshila were in this state. Our education started from paperless society and we are moving towards paperless society. The difference is, in ancient time paper was not invented but now the advent of IT, we are moving towards paperless society.In the context of Information Technology the article, tries to explain the existing scenario of automation especially in Academic Libraries. The paper will include the libraries of Jharkhand too. The Jharkhand is a bifurcated part of Bihar. It came into existence on 15 November 02. At present, there are 14 universities catering the needs for higher education in the state. The Patna University in richest university in terms of collection, infrastructure facilities, established in 1917.In 1992, according to State University act five new Universities were established. All the Universities are having well equipped Libraries with modern architecture. So far as Library automation is concerned it is joint responsibility of state authority and UGC/INFLIBNET to make full automated.Item Library Automation in Academic Libraries in India: Problems and Prospects(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Singh, YogendraTraces briefly the history of library automation in India. During the past decade or so, use of information technology has been gaining a lot of attention and importance due to the encouragement give by the government of India, university authorities and state governments. We find application of IT in every sphere of work and several government departments have started e-governance cells to reach out to the public to offer their services. Under these circumstances librarians cannot lag behind. Indian initiatives and barriers to network development have been discussed in brief.Item Retrospective Conversion Tool for Academic Libraries in India: An Initiative by INFLIBNET(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Prem Chand; Gohel, Umesh; Chandrakar, RajeshINFLIBNET has ambitious plan to connect libraries, scholars and student by providing resources spread across the country using latest information technology tools. Collecting the entire bibliographic sources of academic libraries and providing online access facility in the form of union catalogue of these resources is major objective of the Centre. In the past, INFLIBNET has initiated major steps in this direction. Retrospective Conversion software is another effort by INFLIBNET, which is significant tool for libraries, who are in the process of automation. This paper reveals about the tool developed recently by the INFLIBNET Centre for retrospective conversion process at local level
