Item Application of RFID in Libraries for Physical Information Security – A View(INFLIBNET Center, 2006-02-02) Mulla, K R; Chandrashekara, MNew technologies have always been of interest for libraries, both for the potential of increasing the quality of service and for improving efficiency of operations. In the era of globalisation and liberalisation and with the advent of hi-technologies, the whale world has been condensed in a very small frame. With enormous knowledge explosion, the need to quench the thirst of information cannot be over emphasized. Barcode made inventory tracking easier, but they have their disadvantages. For starts each barcode has to be read in individually by the reader. If an entire well stocked information Centre needed to be checked in to a computer, it could mean several hours of work. Furthermore, the basic barcode is just a tag with data printed on it, and this data can’t be updated. Except, of course by sticking another barcode over it. Where Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags come in takes asset tracking to the next level, with smart intelligent tags embedded in the package, the information on the tag can be scanned and updated automatically by readers. RFID married with today’s enterprise resource planning solutions, may soon be the next big thing in information management. The technology provides an automated method to collect product or transaction information. The RFID system works using “smart” tags, with inbuilt silicon chips that store data, a reader that scans information from the tags, and the infrastructure to store and analyse the data. This present paper will give you an understanding of how technology can impact on our libraries.Item Assessment of Electronic Services by Post Graduate Students & Research Scholars of Vellore Institute of Technology.(INFLIBNET Center, 2006-02-02) Ramana, Y .V.This paper presents the status regarding the use of Electronic Resources by the post graduate students and Research scholars of VIT. The data reveals the extent of usefulness and the problems faced by the users in accessing the Electronic resources. The institute is providing online databases, online journals, distance education, CD & DVD ROM, Audio & Video cassettes etc. The use of these facilities is not satisfactory. The study shows that a majority of students use online journals for preparing project reports and for listing references only. The use of electronic resources for research purpose is very less. Measures should be taken to improve the use of electronic services.Item Beyond Interoperability : Quality Control of Learning Objects(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-02-02) Srivastava, RavijaLearning objects are building blocks of e-learning . They are found embedded in various types of environments viz. institutional repositories, VLEs/MLEs, online learning repositories and personal repositories. In the distributed environments it is difficult to locate a desirable LO to match with a given set of learning objectives, hence various standards pertaining to interoperability of the repositories and to facilitate cross-searching, accessibility, reusability, aggregation of LOs have been developed. But there is no agreement on the use of instructional design and verification of the content of a LO. The present study outlines quality control measures currently practiced by the managing organizations of selected representative learning repositories, with respect to these two criteria only.Item Building a Semantic Web for Academic Networks: A Conceptual Architecture(INFLIBNET Center, 2006-02-02) Srinivas, K; Ahson, S I; Murthy, T A VIn this paper an effort has been made to propose a conceptual architecture for building an academic semantic web information retrieval for academic network.
