Two different student groups (novice and experienced) volunteered in this study. They carried out five search tasks and their performance was recorded through a computer screen recording application. Data was captured on the time taken, error rates and success score. After completion of search tasks, they all completed a questionnaire on their satisfaction with Google. The performance data showed that overall experienced students performed better. Differences were significant across all performance measures between groups. Students held neither highly positive nor highly negative perceptions about Google. Experienced students were significantly more satisfied with Google than the naive group. The findings could be used to redesign the present Google search engine.Item Academic Search Engines : Librarian’s Friend, Researcher’s Delight(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Chakravarty, Rupak; Randhawa, SukhwinderSearch engines are about excitement, optimism, hope and enrichment. Search engines are also about despair and disappointment. A researcher while using search engines for resource discovery might have experienced one or the other sentiments. One may say that user satisfaction depends much upon the search strategies deployed by the user. But at the same time its also depends upon the quality of search engine used for information retrieval. Today, there are many search engines used for resource discovery. They display the results of the searches made in readily-comprehensible manner with lots of customization possibilities including refining and sorting. This paper is an attempt to analyze qualitatively and quantitatively the three most used and popular search engines for academic resource discovery: Google Scholar, Scirus and Windows Live Academic.Item An Analytical Study of Ebsco Online Journal Databases: With Special Reference to I.G.M. Library, University of Hyderabad(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Reddy, Y Nagi; Suseela, V JThe paper describes the importance of journal as an important medium of communicating recent developments in scientific research and the dependence of academic community of any University for their research work. It also presents the latest trend of journal publishing in electronic medium. Since, Indira Gandhi Memorial Library is the first University Library to introduce one of the major online medium to their academic community by subscribing EBSCO Online Journals Database, an analytical study of the usage statistics was undertaken in terms of number of sessions ,searches, abstracts and full text articles in order to measure deficiencies in the system. The data indicates that the usage is found extensive during initial years than the subsequent years. Abstracts and full text articles are more extensively referred Linking activity is also found to be constantly increased.. It is observed that the user’s unawareness regarding these developments is primarily affecting the usage of this new medium, whereas audit, renewal procedures, networking problems, etc. are added to the decline of the usage of e-journals. The paper suggests that a lot of orientation and publicity is still required to the academic community to increase the level of usage of such databases.Item Access to Web-based Community Information Services in North East India(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Singh, Ch Ibohal; Devi, Th Madhuri; Devi, N Vidyavati; Singh, N GiridhariIn this paper an attempt is being made here to highlight the access to web-based community information services of the Community Information Centres (CICs) in North East India. Discusses in detail the features, search strategies, citation indexing values of Google Scholar.Item Hybrid System for Map Indexing Enhanced through GIS(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) PromilaIndexing techniques during the earlier phases of their evolution relied entirely on the textual/ conceptual content for the purpose of treating conventional documents for the Index preparation. But with the changing times, the non-conventional documents, such as sound recordings, imageries, paintings, pictures, motion pictures, diagrams and maps etc. were inculcated in the collection maintained by the libraries. And in the modern society, they form integral part of any library collection. For the purpose of treating these non-textual documents, for the adequate storage and retrieval, fresh initiatives are required, preferably incorporating automated facilities. The present paper takes up the specific case of ‘Maps’, being a unique document with an ability to be auxiliary to every other discipline, in addition to that of the mother discipline i.e. Geography. But owing to the same very unique Characteristic, the Indexers face hazards while taking up the indexing of Maps. Since neither the Content nor the Concept based Indexing have been found to be absolutely suitable for the purpose. Therefore a feasibility study for a hybrid type of Indexing system has been attempted in the present paper. Beside the study explores the utility of Geographic Information System as a tool, which can further facilitate the preparation of an Index for a chunk of Maps.Item Information Seeking Behaviour on Internet: A Review(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Khongtim, JiarlimonThis paper deals with how people search the required information from the internet and also to identify the patterns of information seeking behaviour on internet if any through literature review. Though most of the studies found that the users are able to get information from internet using different strategies but still they feel that instructions and training are needed for the internet users.Item Networked Information Society: A window to Library Profession in 21st Century(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Kumar, MritunjayThe paper is an attempt to understand the basics of the information society and their application to enhance the library profession. For convenience, the paper has been divided into two parts; the part one discusses the basic features of the networked society. This society has influenced our life in many ways. Starting from personal life to business establishment and the government organizations, in the recent years, Information communication technology (ICTs) is of great help. The part two, however, discusses their application to upgrade the library profession, which could possibly change our orientation towards the profession and also to a large extent help the users. The application of ICTs in the libraries, in my opinion, will not only help in shedding the traditional mind-set, but also help to reduce the gap between nations. Use of Internet, online sources, and several such trends would help to overcome the digital divide and bring the knowledge to our doors. The part two discusses all these concepts and their possible application in our libraries and knowledge centres.Item Role of Meta Search Engines in Web- based Information System: Fundamentals and Challenges(INFLIBNET Center, 2006-11-09) Das, Subarna KumarMeta search engines are powerful tools that search multiple search engines simultaneously. Unlike crawler-based search engines such as Google, AllTheWeb, AltaVista and others, meta search engines generally do not build and maintain their own web indexes. Instead, they use the indexes built by others, aggregating and often postprocessing results in unique ways. Meta search engines accept your query, and send it out to multiple search engines in parallel. They are often quite fast, using private “backdoor” servers made available by the search engines they query. They get this privileged status thanks to revenue sharing agreements. There are several advantages to using meta search engines, though they’re not always the most appropriate tool. The most obvious advantage is that you can get results from multiple search engines without having to visit each in turn. Apart from the time savings, there is some evidence that this gives your search a broader scope, since each individual search engine’s index differs from all others. Present paper attempts to highlights the role of meta search engine in web- based information retrievalItem Specters in the Use of Electronic Journals: the North Eastern hill University Experience(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Hangsing, PA general observation of the northeastern universities and specifics based on NEHU experiences indicates that the universities in the northeastern regions record comparatively lower percentage of usage. The poor statistical show is attributed to the infrastructural dwarf in the universities. The nature of skewed usage pattern is found similar to other empirical studies suggesting that such methods may be espoused to form the parameters for determining the core collection of the electronic journal consortium. The paper briefly examines the existing subscription deals and suggested that resorting to alternative deals may strengthen collection and ultimately the usage pattern. The paper also maintains that higher per capita expenditure per students should be encouraged in the region to buildup infrastructure and come at par with the mainstream.Item Awareness About and Use of Internet Search Engines Amongst Social Science Researchers in North East India(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Laloo, Bikika; Lahkar, NarendraDiscusses findings of a study conducted on Social Science researchers in two Universities in North East India. Findings show that Social Science researchers in North East India are having the same issues regarding Internet search engines as researchers in other parts of the world. Concludes that better presentation of web sites would help them get indexed by search engines and make them more accessible. Also, improvement in search strategies would help researchers find more relevant information, faster.Item Subject Information Gateways as the Scholars’ Pathways for Avoiding the Internet Chaos: New Prospects and Challenges for LIS Professionals(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) LalhmachhuanaDescribes the emergence of Subject Information Gateways as the pathways for finding and accessing authentic and scholarly digital information sources and other resources in different media and formats that are available on the Internet. Researchers are extensively using these repositories to publish their research outputs. Bibliographic control of scholarly literature of commercial publications is mostly available in the form of Abstracting, Indexing and Citation sources. But in the similar way for the open access publications it not the same case. Bibliographic control of open access e-resources is a major issue. The rapid growth of scholarly information resources available in electronic form and their organisation by digital libraries is proving fertile ground for the development of sophisticated new services, of which citation linking will be one indispensable example. Many new projects, partnerships and commercial agreements have been announced to build citation linking applications. Authors made an effort in this paper to articulate few bibliographic and citation resources.Item Questioning and Virtual Reference(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Guha, Tamal KumarThe article briefs about the activities of the Digital Reference Service its present scenario. The importance and functionalities of the service are highlighted. The very first tool used for searching on the Internet was Archie (1990) was created at McGill University and the first Web search engine Wandex (1993) was developed by Matthew Gray at MIT. Thereafter, many search engines came into use. There are a wide variety of Search Engines across the Internet and help us to find the most accurate and relevant information across the Information Superhighway. This paper attempts to mine, classify and profile the special Search Engines which are also known as Topical or Vertical Search Engines and Vortals.Item A consortium for College Libraries in Meghalaya : A Proposal(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Thabah, Jacqueline Jeane; Sumer, Firstborn RoyPaper discusses the present scenario of affiliated College Libraries in Meghalaya and found that some of the libraries have computerized their collection. Moreover all the libraries have similar resources as they follow the same syllabi and also subscribe to some important journals. Due to financial constraints most of the libraries’ procurement is limited. This proposal may be considered as a pilot project which could be extended to a greater dimension. It could be a role model which could be implemented initially in the libraries situated in the Capital and extended to other libraries of the State and North-East region as a whole. The proposal follows the same concept as the UGCINFONET e-journals consortium, but intended for affiliated college libraries.Item Library Networking: A Conceptual Model of Rural Library Information Netwok System for Easy Access By Rural Community of Manipur(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Meitei, L Shanta; Devi, Th PurnimaThe paper discusses the term library network as an essential component in information society. The paper highlights the scenario of rural libraries in the state of Manipur. This paper further elaborates the conceptual ideas for setting up a proposed model of ‘Rural Library Information Network System’ for powering the masses for the construction of knowledge based society and importance of Information Communication Technologies(ICTs) which is key to bridging new digital connections in the rural areas of Manipur in this global digital information age.Item Resource Sharing, Networking and Library Consortia: Problem and Prospects in Bangladesh(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Rahman, Md Anisur; Nahar, Mahmudun; Akhter, RazinaThe emerging Information Technologies have brought many changes in libraries. These technologies have facilitated LIS professionals to work together to acquire and share library collection and provide digital library services to the user community. Increase of the literature in all subjects and shrinking of the library budget made the libraries depend upon each other. This leads to library cooperation, resource sharing and networking. Now the more accepted system of resource sharing is library consortia. Consortia approach is one of the many ways of maintaining cooperation and coordination among the libraries and in fact it has emerged as the ‘state of the art’ in library cooperation in recent years. The online databases; electronic journals are facilitate the formation of consortia among the libraries. This paper highlights the past and existing resource sharing and networking status of Bangladesh. In this paper the authors also depict the benefits of library consortia and try to provide some recommendations for the formation of library consortia in Bangladesh.
