    Basics of Networking and Security
    (INFLIBNET Centre, 2004)
A computer network is an interconnection of various computer systems located at different places. In computer network two or more computers are linked together with a medium and data communication devices for the purpose of communicating data and sharing resources. The computer that provides resources to other computers on a network is known as server. In the network the individual computers, which access shared network resources, are known as workstations or nodes.

IMPACT OF INTERNET ON LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES
    (INFLIBNET Centre, 2004)
Developed in North America, the Internet has rapidly spread around the world in the past decade and has had an impact on the lives of millions of people. Many could not work effectively without it. Over the past few decades a variety of new and exciting information services have appeared on the Internet, each with its own distinct characteristics. Computer and Communication technologies have revolutionised the whole world of information and have penetrated in areas beyond libraries transforming nearly every facet within society. Powerful PCs, sophisticated network technologies, affordable telephone lines have given a boost for Internet. Use of the Internet and other network resources is changing the traditional library functions. While in the 1980’s and early 1990’s the Internet’s modalities were changing traditional library functions and was used mainly for communications, database searching, and bibliographic access etc. Today, the Internet’s modalities are changing or augmenting traditional functions of library profession such as the information transfer process and the perceived nature of information itself.

State of Art Library Software (SOUL)
    (INFLIBNET Centre, 2004) INFLIBNET Centre
The SOUL is state-of-the-art library automation software designed and developed by the INFLIBNET. It is user-friendly software developed to work under client-server environment. Although looking at the name of the software, one may think that it is meant for University libraries only, but in fact it is flexible enough to be used for automating any type or size of library in India. While designing this software, the international standards, bibliographic formats, networking protocols, and typical functions of all types and sizes of libraries, particularly at university level, have been taken into account. The functions have been grouped into six categories, looking into the functional divisions of Indian University libraries. At present SOUL uses RDBMS on Windows N.T. operating system as back end to store and retrieve the data. However, keeping in view the trends in IT towards Linux operating system, efforts are under way also to provide SOUL to work on Linux platform. The inputs received from expert team consisting of practicing librarians and the feedbacks received from users of our earlier software, ILMS, have given a strong base for designing this software. SOUL is near total solution offered by INFLIBNET to Indian libraries. It puts library staff at ease in exploring all the functions to their advantages with the help of professionally prepared manual.

Creation of Union Databases at INFLIBNET
    (INFLIBNET Centre, 2004)
With the changing environment of librarianship, the focus on access to information, rather than ownership, library professionals have manifold responsibilities. Shrinking local resources and growth of resource sharing and document delivery through network environment, union catalogue in one form or another is important features in today’s library world. INFLIBNET Centre has taken the initiative of building union catalogue of academic libraries in India, which contains bibliographic description of holding information for books, serials and theses in all subjects areas held in university libraries in India. INFLIBNET union catalogue is traditional union catalogue, in which records from multiple sources and formats are incorporated in to a single database. Recently, entire database platform have been changed and developed new web based search engine. The main feature of the new tool is that we tried to integrate different database on one server, which contains 12 lakh unique records of books.

INFLIBNET ACTIVITIES, SERVICES AND FUTURE PLANS
    (INFLIBNET Centre, 2004)
Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) is the major IUC of the University Grants Commission (UGC) started in 1991 with its Headquarters located at Gujarat University Campus, Ahmedabad. The Programme is directed towards modernization of libraries and information centers, and establishment of a mechanism for information transfer and access, to support scholarship, learning and academic pursuits. It is also aimed at establishing a national network of libraries and information centres in universities, institutions of higher learning and R and D institutions in India. It is basically a co-operative endeavor in resource development, sharing and its utilization at national level. Over the years, the Programme has progressed steadily and since May 1996 it is an independent autonomous Inter-University Centre under UGC to co-ordinate and implement the nationwide high-speed network using state-of-the-art technologies for connecting all the university libraries in the country. INFLIBNET is set out to be a major player in promoting scholarly communication among academicians and researchers in India.
