    Access to E-journals through UGC INFONET Digital Library Consortium: A Study of Usage Trends among the Universities of North East India

    The paper highlights the usage trends of access to e-journals in ten universities of North East India. The preliminary findings from the data of last five years revealed that there is an upward trend. The paper briefly describes open access journals and the measurement tools of e-journals.

    Access to Scholarly Literature in Higher Education Institutions Under Inflibnet Consortium

    The escalating price of electronic journals, Indexing and abstracting databases along with traditionally published print subscriptions has forced library community to explore alternative means of subscription. The consortia based subscription is perhaps a solution for subscription of peerreviewed journals. In India, during last five years we have witnessed many consortia based subscription, ranging from subject specific to institution specific. The advancement of Internet and telecommunication has made it possible to subscribe network based resources to the users. The paper describes about the initiative taken by INFLIBNET in this direction and highlights the importance of current trends of usage statistics of networked resources of various publishers. Further the authors describe the patterns of electronic journal usage by the members of UGC-Infonet Digital library consortium during the last three years.

    Assessment and Evaluation of Usage of UGC Infonet E-journals Consortium in North East Universities

    Libraries, faced with declining budgets, increasing subscription prices have found themselves unable to purchase all publications and materials that their users would generally expect to have. To compensate for this, there is shift to subscribe the journals by other models and methods. Library consortia are one of the most effective means for libraries to subscribe to E-journals. University libraries in India are accessing e-journal under UGC-INFONET E-journal consortium. This facility has also been extended to libraries in North Eastern region. This paper reflects on the growing importance of usage statistics of electronic journals, their increasing use, and in particular universities in North East region It highlights the current usage of various e-resources accessed by the users of different universities located in North East region.

    Institutional Repositories, Open Access Movement and OAI- PMH Complaint Software

    The article outlines the overview of Institutional Repositories. A growing number of universities across the globe are running institutional repositories projects using open source software, while many others are in the planning stages. We move towards global sharing of information using these software and librarian have to play pivotal role in archiving the digital content, produced by the faculty members. Within next few years, I expect that universities in India also create repositories and effectively use open source software. This article describes about the current development of Open Access Initiative, Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) an important infrastructure component for Institutional repositories. A convergence of technology developments and other initiatives has made IRs possible. Technology costs, especially storage costs, have dropped significantly. There is now a variety of open source and commercial software platforms available for an institution wishing to develop an IR.. The paper highlights about general overview of Institutional Repositories, open source software, standard and protocol and role of INFLIBNET.

    Planning for Digital Library of Special Collections in Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) Using Dspace: A Case Study

    Rare documents are the primary sources of historic information. Digital preservation of rare documents restores it from loss, decay and theft. This paper discusses all these aspects with the practical approach planned for digital preservation, collection of its rare documents, conferences, audios of important speakers and other collections of IIAS Library. The preservation of digital information and brief installation process of Dspace are an important part of this discussion. Presently IIAS library has opted Dspace software for the development of digital archive.

    Standards for Creating Bibliographic Databases in Indian Academic Libraries under INFLIBNET Umbrella

    In the field of library and information science, importance of cataloguing, classification, abstracting and indexing standards play a major role to represent the appropriate information of any document for patron’s use. In beginning, these standards were used to the documents in the print formats like shelf list, catalogue card etc. Gradually, after the invention of the computer technology, representation of information in print format has changed into the electronic format. There with the development of technology, due to flood of information and variations in the representation of the information, were forced the profession to develop different bibliographic standards; till date almost more than 30 bibliographic standards has emerged. Thus, every country is following their own bibliographic standards for representing the print documents into the electronic format. Same way, India is also working in creating the bibliographic databases of the resources available in different academic libraries of the country. INFLIBNET (Information and Library Network) Centre, UGC, Ahmedabad has embarked upon this issue and working in war footing level to achieve the goal. The authors describe the bibliographic standards being used for creating databases by Indian Academic libraries under INFLIBNET umbrella.

    Towards Quality Assurance in Reader Services in a Digital Era: A Case Study of Himachal Pradesh University Library Readers Survey

    This study presented was undertaken, to determine the quality of availability and usage of library services by users at Himachal Pradesh University, at the behest of Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the University. The main goal of this study was to pave way for assuring the quality of library services and to initiate improvement of services through administrative action where scope of improvement is indicated by the analysis of the data.Data were collected using well-framed questionnaire, based on Delphi method, from192 users of library including teachers, research scholars, post graduate students and under graduate students. Findings indicate that the majority of the users are satisfied with the reader services provided by library. It was found that users lack awareness about availability of e-resources in the library However, training and guidance in the use of library resources particularly e-resources and services is necessary to help users to meet their requirements and aspirations to march ahead in the digital world.

    Usage of Electronic Journals Under UGC Infonet E-Journal Consortium in North Eastern University Libraries

    The rapid development of the Internet during the 1990s has opened up a new possibility where traditional print journals are being replaced by, or at least supplemented by, the electronic journals. Low library budget and increasing cost of subscription are some of the important factors for shift from print media to electronic one This paper discusses the role of UGC-Infonet in promotion of E-journals in the country through E-journal consortium. Highlights that the usage of E-journals is much below the expected target by the Universities of North East which have been given access to E-journals. This has been supported by usage statistics by these five universities.

    Web Scale Discovery Tools

    Web scale discovery services for the library environment have the capacity to more easily connect researchers with the library’s vast information repository. This includes locally held and hosted content, such as physical holdings, digital collections, and local institutional repositories. Perhaps more significantly, web scale discovery also accesses a huge array of remotely hosted content, often purchased or licensed by the library, such as publisher and aggregator content for tens of thousands of full-text journals, additional content from abstracting and indexing resources, and content from open access repositories. This paper defines web scale discovery and highlights importance of discovery tools being used by the libraries.
