Health care institutions are considering, and a few are making. large-scale commitments to information systems and services that will affect every aspect of their organizations function. Health science libraries have to adopt several of the Integrated Academic Information Management Systems (IAIMS) concepts and implement them at a hospital library level. The ideal situation in which the healthy professions can profit fully from the rationalization and management of knowledge in the medical school setting is one of reapproachment between the transmitters (teachers) and receivers (students) of information, whether medical or in any other subject.Item Information Management in Academic Libraries - Some Observations(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Prasad, H.N.Information management systems include all methods and procedures for collecting and processing information on a particular resource and formatting that data in a manner which is useful for the users. It should meet at least two requirements: to bring the information being looked for and to bring the required information fast. Computers and telecommunication technologies, as information management tools, have brought changes in the organization of information. Different aspects of information management, and future issues are discussed.Item Software Problems in Library Automation in India(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Francis, A.T.The systems and infrastructure used for information management should have international standards and compatibility. Few important agencies / institutions engaged in the propagation of standards in databases and related softwares are American National Standards Institute (ANSI), International Standards Organisation (ISO), National Information Standards Organisation (NISO) and International Eletro Technical Committee (IETC). The author enumerates the important issues to be considered while selecting a library software along with the names of the major library softwares available. The author suggests for the establishment of a constant mechanism to make aware the library professional about the developments in the field, issuing of guidelines for standard library software, preparation of the list of standard softwares and evaluation of the software by a Software Evaluation Committee (SEC) at the national level.Item Collection Development in the Context of Library Networks(INFLIBNET Centre, 1998-03-04) Reddy, E. RamaIn the recent years, the libraries need to focus their attention towards developing electronic documents selectively and access to electronic information sources using network facilities. Selection of electronic sources for collection development activities is to be done based on certain criteria i.e. reputation of authors. publishers and products, context. format features, access methods, storage and licensing agreements. The author provides strategies for libraries to get into networks and resource sharing trends. The present era is more conducive to the resource sharing and use of financial resources effectively. The concept of ownership need to be replaced with sharing the resources for mutual benefit.Item User Education in University Libraries(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Kumbar, Mallinath; Biradar, B.S.User education is mainly concerned with providing guidance and instruction to the user in the proper use of library collection, individually or collectively, Difference between user education, orientation and initiation is mentioned and the need for user education in the libraries is emphasized. Objectives and methods of user education are provided. Though many institutions', universities and associations in India have organized seminars and conferences on the topic in the past, the necessary infrastructure and the innovation of suitable library instruction methods to suit the Indian conditions are yet to be developed. Therefore, it is the duty of the profession to develop such teaching aids which are suitable to meet the Indian requirements. It has become more urgent due to the heavy use of advanced technologies in libraries and information centers.Item Impact of Information Technology on the Knowledge and Skill Base of Library Staff in lIT-Bombay: A Study of Management of Change(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Subbarao, V.
