Item Blog: A Handy Tool for Librarians(INFLIBNET Centre, 2010-02-18) Rajashekara, G R; Gireesh, D RLibrarians have to learn how to do a lot with just a little in order to promote awareness of their programs and services. They have seized the opportunities to market libraries in the real world via traditional media: newspapers, corporate newsletters, radio, and TV. Many libraries produce brochures, pathfinders, and their own newsletters. So it is no surprise to see librarians stepping up to the plate and spreading the word online with blogs. Savvy librarians have identified blogs as another means to market libraries and their services. The article discuses basics of blogs, like history, types, features and limitations. And also it explains how it’s useful for librarians. The rapid advent use of IT has completely revolutionized the library systems and changed library services. In India open access movement is getting momentum in libraries to overcome the access barriers of scholarly publication. The institutional repositories were identified through a study of the literature, as well as internet searching and browsing. Each of the Institutional Repository software has a lot of features, unique facilities and excellent capabilities, which the users could explore and experiment. But in this paper we have tried to compare only, two Institutional Repository software i.e. Dspace & Eprints & its role in building Institutional Repositories along with the comparison the various aspects of D-space & E-print software, the various institutions using it in India for their Institutional Repository. The fiber optic and Cat 6 cable forms a Network connecting various data servers of the library locally and globally. Most common users of a library are scientists, academicians, technical personnel, students. It is important to disseminate the research information arrived /available to the Users in addition to archived data. It is also very important that users must be aware of the various services provided by libraries. Library managers are required to send clear messages to the users that the business of library is to provide required information in the shortest possible time. In this era of information technology, attracting people to library is very difficult. Library Heads and staff should become proactive in providing and propagating the services and facilities available at the Library.Based on the interaction with many users, and analyzing their experiences, it is found that minimization of reaction time in providing the required information to the users is essential. In this paper, services and the initiatives taken by Library known as “Knowledge Centre (KC)” of Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) to bring awareness about the services provided by KC are presented. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is effectively utilized by the Knowledge Centre to achieve the objective of making available information required by Scientists in time to help them to devote more time in project activities rather spending time in searching for information.Item Impact of Library Collection Towards Doctoral Studies A Case Study on Citation Analysis of PhD Dissertations in the School of Science & Technology in Tezpur University(INFLIBNET Centre, 2010-02-18) Hazarika, Tilak; Sarma, Dipak; Gohain, AnjanImpact of library holdings in terms of physical and online access on the doctoral studies in Tezpur University have been studied based on citation appended to the PhD dissertations in four subjects clubbed under the School of Science & Technology. Two latest dissertations (degree awarded) from each four subjects have been taken for the study selected through systematic sampling method. Category wise distribution of the cited items viz. journals, books & monographs, conference proceedings, electronic sources, web citations and others have been studied. Category wise percentile distribution and availability of cited items in the parent library have been calculated for journals and books followed by preparation of rank list of journals for each four subjects studied. Some well known statistical and bibliometric parameters have been applied for the study. Suggestive approach to re-engineering of collection development policy of the university libraries have been lined up based on the findings.Item Challenges and Issues of College Library Services in Dibrugarh District of Assam: A Case Study(INFLIBNET Centre, 2010-02-18) Das, Dhrubajit; Baruah, DipikaThe college libraries of Dibrugarh district are facing many problems due to lack of adequate finance, collection, sufficient manpower, and lack of infrastructure. As a result they cannot provide expected services to the users. In this paper a study has been conducted on the management and services of college libraries in Dibrugarh district of Assam. The study intends to find out the various services rendered by the college libraries in Dibrugarh district as well as users satisfaction from the existing services; status of library automation and problems faced by the college libraries and forwarded some vital suggestions.Item Wiki Installation and Customization(INFLIBNET Centre, 2010-02-18) Kumar, RajeevWiki is now-a-days widely used as the Content Management System in Web 2.0 world. Concept of Wiki actually revolutionized the Web 2.0 world. The present paper describes the philosophy of Wiki, one of the widely used Web Content Management System in Web 2.0 era, and various wiki tools available as well as wiki syntax. Detailed method of installation and customization of one of the widely used wiki software MediaWiki is discussed. The software is used to install Wiki at INFLIBNET Centre.Item Re– engineering Library Acquisition: A Case Study(INFLIBNET Centre, 2010-02-18) Devi, V Rama; Haritha, BLibraries have always had the ability to respond to the challenges of technology, from the printing press of the middle ages to the print explosion of the twentieth century, to the digital ‘print’ of today. Modern economic rationalism demands that libraries become more accountable for both the services they provide and the funds they expand. Such accountability requires libraries to investigate, analyze and, where necessary change the methods and processes they have traditionally undertaken to justify their very existence to funding bodies. Re-engineering is about changing to the way we do things. Re-engineering is reinventing the way one does business, by stepping back and examining values, goals, and the system processes used to meet these goals. Process redesign is often an outcome of this evaluation. The acquisition process is one prime process for re-engineering as it consists of a large number of easily identifiable routines which can be compartmentalized, and altered as required. This paper is case study of Dr. B.R. With the publishing world steadily moving from print to electronic, the libraries are also slowly adopting to the changes. Electronic information environment facilitates enhancement in the speed of service, number of users served,the quantum and exhaustiveness of information provided. However, the libraries need to have a methodical approach to move from print to electronic media. They should have well defined policies in place. This has made libraries to supplement long-established services with online services to users, fulfilling any time and anywhere needs and expectations. The World Wide Web is a new powerful tool for reference librarians. Information which was once only available to large libraries with very high budgets is suddenly available to any library with Internet connections. Reference librarians themselves are participating in the electronic publication trade by creating Web pages and finding aids to assist both themselves and their users to locate information electronically on the World Wide Web. The web which poses a new challenge for librarians, offers major new tools and techniques to provide the powerful services. The present paper tries to focus new aspect of reference service. The main object of evolving this policy is to provide easy access to all the e-resources, provide Authentic Information to users and availability to anywhere. The e-resource Acquisition Policy should follow the Library Standards like BSI (Bureau of Indian Standards), ISO (International Standards Organization) etc., Law of IPR and Copyrights should be applicable. For acquisition of e-resources and for its uninterrupted optimum utilization, libraries develop their own acquisition policy which provide safeguard while acquiring e-resources and also in the event of dispute or odd situation. With the changing world ICT plays a dominant role in today’s library and information centers. But the academic libraries of Assam especially in technical institutions except few are lagging behind. Also, this paper discusses the reengineering perspective of Library.Item Management and Preservation of AV Materials in TV Media of North Eastern Region : A Case Study(INFLIBNET Centre, 2010-02-18) Barman, Sanjay KumarThe management and preservation of AV(AV) materials in TV(TV) media is a less touched area of Library & Information Science. This paper discusses the management and preservation system of AV materials of 9 (Nine) selected TV media libraries of North Eastern Region. The tape formats used, staff strength, accessioning, classification, cataloguing, automation, preservation techniques etc. are discussed. Some problems have been identified and probable suggestions are put forth.
