Dissemination of the right information to the right user, at the right time, at the right cost is the grass root principle of any information system. For which, the IT (Information Technology) helps in many ways, which is right from the invention of a personal computer to CD-ROM (Compact Disk-Read only Memory) technology. CD-ROM technology is mainly used in the intormetion storage and retrieval operations, which helps to handle the large volume of data (which can be textual,numerical, graphical) in a effective, accurate and faster way. In this information explosion era, culling out the required information is a challenging task to the librarians and information professionals. To succeed in this situation using the traditionally available information dissemination methods are not ideal and advisable. The ideal solution to handle such a large volume of data is the application of CD-ROM technology, the one which is quite cheaper and economical too. This paper deals about the general characteristic features of CORaM databases, hardware and sottwere requirements to set up a CD-ROM work station, popular CD-ROM databases available in various subjects, and the special benefits of CD-ROM databases, etc.

The commercial softwares available are neither inadequate to any particular library for specific functions nor economical. Also, most of these packages hardly adopted international standards. To overcome these problems, an attempt has been made to develop a software for create and maintennance of serial database. It need not be overemphasized that for successful computerisation of libraries, it is necessary to have a sound database. Standardization of records in required not only for efficient retrieval within the library, but also to facilitate communication among the libraries far and wide. However creating such a database is a formidable task both in terms of workload involved as well as in terms of the expertise that is needed. fn the days when instant results is what is expected out of a project like library computerisation, the fact that database creation requires time and money - is a proposition very difficult to be digested by all the concerned people. The efforts to show the quick results further complicate already difficult problems. The first and major casualty is the quality of the database. It remains incomplete in contents as well as in standards. Several other complications are seen. This paper proposes to highlight the problems relating to database creation in a library which is unusually big. It attempts to suggest some alternative solutions.
