    Understanding Marketing Approach For Librarys
    (INFLIBNET Centre, 1996-02-15) Jambhekar, Ashok
The need to serve more and diverse functions has often brought pressure upon libraries and librarians to become more efficient to find additional resource. It could be attempted through fund raising or by adopting marketing strategies. It is necessary to understand that the resources qenerated should be used to supplement the existing resources. In the US, there are a number of centres contributing to the study and research. Fund raising is a well developed function in a number of research libraries. It calls for commitment and highly professional skills to make the programme successful. However, instances of fund raising are rare here. The concpet is successful in the US but it may not take off in the developing countries and also may not be sustainable over a period of time. It is an age of competition. and free market economy where enterprise, innovativeness, and creativityare essential elements to forge ahead. The libraries would better take a dispassionate look at their functioning.

Networks As Time Saving Devices in Libraries
(INFLIBNET Centre, 1996-02-15) Bharucha, Rahoda; Patil, Rohini
In the present information society vast amount of information can be instantaneously accessed even from any part of the world. Until a few years researchers used to start their work by requesting bibliographic searches. Information was obtained from libraries, by attending conferences, etc. But the advent of computer networking accessing information has become easy and quick and this has bridged the gap between the library and the user. The libraries of the future will become less paper libraries as more and more information is available on the networks. The problems which most libraries face are large budget cuts and shortage of staff. Even though the resources that is money, material and manpower decrease; libraries find that there is a substantial increase in the demand for services and the demand for more information. Since the PRL Library has been facing these problems, we have tried to devise ways and means whereby more services can be given with less resources by using new technology. Of course, most of the work described here is possible owing to the library automation, programme which was started in the early sixties and due to the availability of computers, local area network and the e-meil technology.

CD -ROM Databases The Practical Information Solution For The Librarians and Users
(INFLIBNET Center, 1996-02-15) Kesavan, R Venkata
Dissemination of the right information to the right user, at the right time, at the right cost is the grass root principle of any information system. For which, the IT (Information Technology) helps in many ways, which is right from the invention of a personal computer to CD-ROM (Compact Disk-Read only Memory) technology. CD-ROM technology is mainly used in the intormetion storage and retrieval operations, which helps to handle the large volume of data (which can be textual, numerical, graphical) in a effective, accurate and faster way. In this information explosion era, culling out the required information is a challenging task to the librarians and information professionals. To succeed in this situation using the traditionally available information dissemination methods are not ideal and advisable. The ideal solution to handle such a large volume of data is the application of CD-ROM technology, the one which is quite cheaper and economical too. This paper deals about the general characteristic features of CORaM databases, hardware and sottwere requirements to set up a CD-ROM work station, popular CD-ROM databases available in various subjects, and the special benefits of CD-ROM databases, etc.
