New ways of communicating with rural India are beginning to emerge. If cable television can happen, can broadband and convergence be far behind? Liberal exchange of information and experiences over the internet, person – to –person communication amongst virtual communities spread over thousands of miles, distribution of products and services though this multi- transactional conduit, is converting today’s world in to a vibrant global and information village.Item Search Techniques for Accessing CD-Rom Databases(INFLIBNET Center, 2004-11) Bhatnagar, AnjanaIt is an indisputable fact that the computer information revolution has fundamentally changed library services across the nation for the past decades. Two recent advancements of information technologies, in particular, had significant impact on Library services. First, the introduction of CD-ROM technology has provided library users powerful access to large databases. Second, the creation of electronic networks has made online remote information access a reality. With the introduction of CD-ROM had a powerful impact on the storage and retrieval of information. CD-ROMs have proved particularly effective for storing bibliographical references. What are the CD-ROM Databases, why we use them and why we don’t want to use them in academic libraries are discussed briefly. Types of databases are explained by illustration. Search features commonly available in four selected CD-ROM databases such as keyword search, phrase search, Boolean search etc are discussed briefly. The selected CD-ROM databases are Ulrich’s on disc from Directory, Ei Compendex Bibliographic database, and Emerald full-text database of journal article. Some of the general issues related to the searching and retrieval of information from CD-ROM databases are briefly discussed. Some common points have been identified that the user must consider in order to quickly accessing information on CD-ROM databases in an effective way.Item Impact of Query Operators on Web Search Engine Results : An Evaluative Study(INFLIBNET Center, 2004-11) Lahkar, Narendra; Deka, Sanjib KStudy on Web search services have reported that about 90% of Web searchers using simple queries and only 10% use advanced query operators. In this study, three search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN, are compared in the areas of coverage and duplication in terms of use of Query Operators. Google is found at the top in terms of coverage, as compared with the other two search engines, i.e. MSN Search and Yahoo!. Analysis shows that there is a significant change in coverage when using query operators in all the three search engines. It is found that correct use of query operators would increase the effectiveness of web searching.Item VIT Digital Library: A Case Study(INFLIBNET Center, 2004-11) Ramana, Y VThe paper discuss Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) library, digitization efforts and its custom made library software created with Visual Basic. The North Arcot Educational Trust established the Vellore Engineering College in 1984. This college is situated in the city outskirts of Vellore in Tamil Nadu; Southern India. To satisfy the information needs of faculty and students of the university, and to provide all possible user services, the institute established the Central Library in 1984. The VIT Central library at present is housed in a four-storied building with 51,000 square feet built-in area and is centrally air-conditioned. The library building is well designed and constructed keeping in mind all the necessary functions of a library. Mentions all available modules of the software. The VIT library is using simple in-house developed library software since 1998. The software was developed in Visual Basic, by the Center for Technical Support of the institute. The software consists of only two modules, namely, Circulation and OPAC modules and supported by bar code. The VIT library having a well planned library building and modern facilities is trying to digitize their library.Item Regional Institute of Medical Sciences Library Campus Networking : A Proposal(INFLIBNET Center, 2004-11) Singh, N Giridhari; Koijam, Falguna; Devi, N VidyavatiDescribes in brief the development of Regional Institue of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and upgradation of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences Library as one of the six Regional Libraries of India. Due to ICT only whole world has been become a global village and the other side ICT is accelerating information explosion, which leads to the problem of bibliographical control. But there are some tools, which can help us to manage these digital contents in a systematic order for use. The concept of digital library is very much suitable for information management. Here, we have Greenstone and DSpace Open Source Software for content creation, which are being used for maintaining an institutional repository. After content creations, the objective should be accessing these contents globally, for this purpose we need some broadband networks. In India, UGC-Infonet is the example for such kind of country-wide network which is being responsible for improving the higher educational system in the country with state-of-the-art technology. Now contents and infrastructure with strong network are with us, UGC-Infonet: E-Journals Consortium is one of the good examples which show that how we can facilitate the educational system across the country through this kind of ICT system.Item Studies on the scenario of Internet use pattern of Assam University Community and Local population of barak valley : A survey(INFLIBNET Center, 2004-11) Sinha, Manoj KumarThis paper describes about the usefulness and advantage of Internet in day-to-day life, impact of Internet on the library and information services etc. and explains the aims and objectives of the present survey on the usage of Internet in Barak Valley, methodology used etc. The author highlights the use of Internet in this region is in nascent stage and it has become important to make people of this valley aware for the use of Internet and regarding its potential for having enormous resources of information which can be search instantly provided the minimum facility for Internet access is available. Software agents are autonomous programs which perform a specific personalized task in a heterogeneous and distributed environment. These autonomous, intelligent agents make decisions on behalf of the user, by narrowing the search domain and decreasing the human computer interaction, phenomenally. With the increasing number of institutes and universities across the country and globe it has become very important to share library services rather than duplicating the library facilities everywhere and incurring huge expenditure. In the present paper, the architecture for a digital library DIGLIB is proposed, which helps a user or a group of users identify and find reading material in a virtual or brick and mortar library of his or her interest. DIGLIB uses a software agent which is a unique combination of filtering and information agent to facilitate intelligent search. The information agent performs a general search on various sites rigorously based on a keyword and phrases. The short listed sites are further subjected to a specific search by the filtering agent. The information agent performs a breadth first search on the links ahead and also provides navigation recommendation. A rule-base is maintained by the filtering agent using premises like broad area of interest, specific area of interest, type of article, book, magazine, journals, periodicals etc. to be searched for further narrowing the search domain and suggesting URNs of digital libraries of user’s interest. An attempt has been made to design a digital library interface using an intelligent agent which continually runs in the background and facilitates the task of finding a suitable match between the desired library service and user’s requirement.Item Digital Preservation(INFLIBNET Center, 2004-11) Dhansegaran, GDefines the concept of Digital Preservation . The adoption of different standard creates incompatibility in exchanging data which act as a major barrier in the use of bibliographic and related information. Format compatibilities are necessary for computerized cataloguing data and these are being standardized by the ISO. The MARC 21 format is one of the popular standard exchange format which adhere to ISO 2709 standard and are using majority of the countries in the world. For exchanging data in machine readable form. This paper discusses the history and development of MARC formats, its structure and salient features which made MARC format a set of standard for identifying, storing and communicating cataloguing information.Item Problem and Prospects of Digital Library in Manipur : A Conceptual Study(INFLIBNET Center, 2004-11) Devi, Th. Within next few years, I expect that universities in India also create repositories and effectively use open source software. This article describes about the current development of Open Access Initiative, Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) an important infrastructure component for Institutional repositories. A convergence of technology developments and other initiatives has made IRs possible. Technology costs, especially storage costs, have dropped significantly. There is now a variety of open source and commercial software platforms available for an institution wishing to develop an IR.. The paper highlights about general overview of Institutional Repositories, open source software, standard and protocol and role of INFLIBNET.
