VuFind: An Emerging Open Source Discovery Tool

Since the early days of catalogues, the structure and interface of library tools used for accessing the resources are changing rapidly and dramatically to fulfil the changing user needs. In recent years, the behaviour of library users has been undergoing drastic changes due to increasingly use of web search engines and ICT based services. This paper describes the expectations of such users who are looking for information. It presents an optimized approach that enables academic libraries to provide its patrons with an up-to-date user experience while capitalizing on the unique advantages offered by libraries. Ways of integrating the new solution with the current library environment including features and functionalities of next generation catalogues are discussed
Academic Libraries in the Participatory Age

Libraries are moving into a transitional state i.e. traditional library service and integration of current ICT to facilitate the services. Since the inception of libraries, libraries are trying to develop their collection in order to satisfy the need of their users. It is not possible for the librarians’ to provide all desired information to their users so they depend on other libraries for the information. The Library cooperation started with the participatory culture. The library professionals cooperate each other’s through various ways like inter library loan, consultancies etc. Online catalogs, hightech campus information networks, and accelerated resource sharing present opportunities for building comprehensive information centers. The present paper discusses the participative management, team work, ICT, Library building etc among library professionals as well as the user community. The library 2.0 technologies are helpful for collaborating in information creation, storage and retrieval. The library staff needs to be more dynamic in their approach to learn the current technology and leadership skills.

Federated Search Engines: A Building Block for Participatory Library Service

This article provides a brief background on the current state of information search in this highly connected and pervasive internet age. It is followed by an introduction to the federated search engine and its definition. While this article assumes that the role played by federated search engine in searching disparate information has been now quite justified and established, it lays the emphasis on the capabilities of the federated search engines. It does so by listing the functionalities expected from a federated search engine, and higher level explanation of inner workings of the federated search engine. It also lists the advantages and shortcomings of federated search engines. This is followed by the selection criteria of a federated search engine and lastly a list of some of the popular federated search engines available today.
Achieving Knowledge Management Through Cloud Computing

In era of knowledge based economy and globalization of world economy, a new opportunity has been emerged as a management issue within the spectrum of information management, information technology, artificial intelligence, expert system, semantic web, neural network, cognitive sciences, mathematics and management theory, economics and recently Cloud Computing. This study tries to give a different perspective of the cloud application through a knowledge management perspective and its structure in the cloud computing environment. In recent years, there has been a great hype about cloud computing and different books and literature reviews have classified different types of cloud with various definitions and criteria focusing on mainly three different layers of services being infrastructure, platform and software. The benefit of cloud computing is supply of services anytime, anywhere device-agnostic access. This paper provides a metaobservation over an integrated cloud ecosystem through the knowledge window. Achieving Knowledge Management through Cloud Computing has expanded new insights, vision and practices. This article critically evaluates ways to achieve knowledge management though cloud computing.
Akash Tablet: A Scope for Virtual Service in College Libraries

The use of Tablet PC’s application can fulfill the changing demand of the patron of the libraries. This service is already adopted by the some libraries of Western World. The Akash Tablet computer helps the Indian libraries for serving the patron in modern way. The Akash is very cheap and marketed by the Govt. of India gives the ample opportunity to the college libraries to adopt modern service of library. This article highlights the various features and function of Akash Tablet and its scope in the libraries. The e-resource and institutional repository can be handled very easy and cost effective way through Akash tablet.

Internet has introduced new modes of communication and has extended the scope of reference service to Digital Reference services to the users across the world. The academic library reference service is undergoing a traditional to web based transition period. Modern reference service is committed to render a client focused service to end users. This paper highlights the emerging formats and models of modern reference service. Based on the literature review and practical experience of us, new research directions are suggested, in which user, paraprofessionals as well as librarians various interventions are integrated. An attempt has been made through this article to notify the significance of Digital reference Services as well as web based reference service in present IT environment and suggests the criteria for Planning and implementing Digital Reference Services in libraries. This article highlights various issues related to digital reference service and its application aspects, also examines the various needs before its implications.
ETD an Effective Research Tool: University of Agriculture Sciences, Dharwad (UASD) Case Study

The present paper high lights the ETD initiatives in University of Agriculture Sciences, Dharwad (UASD). It also proves an effective and comprehensive scientific research tool. Around two hundred post graduates and research students were personally interviewed by using short structured questionnaire in the class PGS 501 Library and Information Services, and the result was positive. Many students agreed that the ETD in the University of Agriculture Sciences Dharwad, Karnataka is a very effective tool in their research and writing the theses.

The teachers should actively engage their students in using the library as a kind of laboratory of learning “how to manage their own education”. (1) The library must be taken as an extension of the class-room and expected from the students to use it intelligently in preparation for discussions in class, seminar reports and papers. Students and other Library users may not know the system practice in the Library. What documents available in the library and what facilities the library provides to the user will be discuss in this paper. In addition to this, providing facilities to the faculty inside and outside the library, facilities providing to students for their career development choke out also discussed.
Web Scale Discovery Tools

Web scale discovery services for the library environment have the capacity to more easily connect researchers with the library’s vast information repository. This includes locally held and hosted content, such as physical holdings, digital collections, and local institutional repositories. Perhaps more significantly, web scale discovery also accesses a huge array of remotely hosted content, often purchased or licensed by the library, such as publisher and aggregator content for tens of thousands of full-text journals, additional content from abstracting and indexing resources, and content from open access repositories. This paper defines web scale discovery and highlights importance of discovery tools being used by the libraries.
