They are emerging as a result of advancements in information technology. This study is an attempt to assess the current state of IT application in the media libraries of Delhi being headquarter of about all educational media organizations and their networks of the country. An assessment is made on the basis of the availability of computer hardware, software, operating system, databases of holdings and online connectivity. It reveals that most of the libraries do not follow uniform standards for management and utilization of their collections. It is suggested to develop IT infrastructure for them in a phased manner by procurement of hardware, software, training of personnel and achieving online connectivity.Item Application of Wireless Technologies in Libraries(INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, 2004-02) Mohamed Haneefa, KThe paper deals with the application of wireless technologies in libraries, its benefits and issues to consider for installing such a network; wireless Internet access and Short Messaging Service in libraries. Although libraries have been concerned with preserving cultural and intellectual heritage for centuries, it is only in recent years that preservation and conservation have become activities in their own right. Preservation of digital material is more complex because of the dependencies that exist between the information object itself and its technical environment- an environment that is generally created using rapidly obsolete and, therefore, fragile technology. This dependence can be at both the software and the hardware levels. In this sense, digital media present more complex problems than any other media libraries have ever had to face. The present article explores various strategies and methodologies for preserving digital materials and also focuses on the pressing need for libraries to develop strategies and practical action plans to maintain the safety and accessibility of the world’s historical and cultural heritage.Item Cataloguing of Articles in Periodicals : Database Approach Model in A Biomedical Library(INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, 2004-02) Raghuram, M; Shivakumar, BA separate catalogue/database of articles in periodicals are made available to Users for more comprehensive search and retrieval, to solve the difficulties faced by the users during search in the Internet and downloading the selected records. A methodology developed towards cataloguing of articles available in periodicals and to cover the entire journals collection of both current journals and back volumes for any year in the Library. The downloaded materials from PUBMED collection are sent to WINISIS package, after different stages such as separate programme, FANGORN etc.Item CDROM Databases : an Approach for Creation of Personalized Databases(INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, 2004-02) Dube, Sonia; Premchand; Murthy, T A VDatabase by definition refers to organized collection of data stored at a Central place. Appreciable technical advancements have taken place in the field of Data organization, Metadata and indexing for faster and accurate access to the information. However for applications where connectivity to the centralized database cannot be ensured and has requirement of access to specific set of the database, then the approach proposed by us in this paper can be quite useful. This paper discusses approach for information extraction and tailoring of information as per user requirements – Database Personalization. This paper also addresses the issues of database security and Intellectual Property Rights involved in creation of CDROM Databases.Item Classification Model for Libraries in the Digital Environment(INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, 2004-02) Chudamani, K SThere is lot of research carried out about the models of classification suitable for libraries in digital environment. UDC, CC, DDC, LCC are used in libraries all over the world. People are using existing Classification models and automating them for use in the digital environment. Though this is a right step, one has to look at the operational requirements of the digital environment. Keeping this fact in view, this paper analyses the requirements of the digital environment and points out the adaptations required for the traditional schemes to suit the digital environment .Item Comparison of Rules in Bibliographic and Web Networks(INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, 2004-02) Kretschmer, Hildrun; Kretschmer, TheoThe emergence of the Internet and the Web have led to changes in the process of scholarly publishing and communication. In particular, the way that scientists and scholars search for and find information in patterns of national and international collaboration has changed. The development of information and library sciences together with science studies will, among other things, be fashioned by the development of quantitative studies conducted in this field (The way from librametry to webometrics). The EU has recently financed a new project (WISER) to further investigate the potential of creating new indicators of the Web for use in science and technology policy making. The study of collaboration in e-science is one focus of this project, including questions that examine the extent to which collaboration structures visible in the Web follow similar rules to collaboration networks measured by traditional bibliometric data. There are three specific key objectives: •To develop methods or webometric indicators for measurement of Web visibility of collaboration networks •To collect general rules in bibliographic collaboration structures that are suitable for testing in Web networks •To compare bibliographic collaboration networks and networks visible in the Web There are few general rules in bibliographic co-authorship networks available from the literature. A new approach is proposed by the author: Distribution of co-author couples in journals: “Continuation” of Lotka´s law on the 3rd dimension.Item Creation and Development of a Virtual Library : Problems faced and Lessons learnt from the ‘Gyan Tawi’ Project(INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, 2004-02) Malhan, I V; K, Shivarama RaoThis paper describes the growth of the Internet resources and mentions that the major challenge for the information professional is how to control the growing electronic information, how to evaluate this information to separate the worthwhile information from the trash and how to organize this information. With the development of the Internet, a new pattern of organization of information emerged where electronic documents are linked and arranged in the spatial order instead of traditional hierarchical order of arrangement of information. Moreover, the information is now directly accessible to users over a network of computers. Collecting the most relevant and significant free flowing Internet information and organizing it into a virtual library will facilitate most convenient information access to user communities. This paper highlights the problems faced and lessons learnt from the ‘Gyan Tawi’ virtual library project undertaken by the authors.Item Data Mining Techniques for Information Retrieval(INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, 2004-02) Mukhopadhyay, Bikash; Mukhopadhyay, SripatiData mining automatically and exhaustively explores very large datasets, consequently uncovering otherwise hidden relationships among data. This technology has been successfully applied in science, health, marketing and finance to aid new discoveries and strengthen markets. In addition, data mining techniques are being applied to discover and organize information from the Web. Unfortunately these advancements in data storage and distribution technology have not been accompanied by respective research in data retrieval technology for a long time. To put it in short: we are now being flooded with data, yet we are starving for knowledge. This need has created an entirely new approach to data processing - the data mining, which concentrates on finding important trends and meta-information in huge amounts of raw data. In this paper the main concepts of data mining and automatic knowledge discovery in databases are presented (clustering, finding association rules, categorisation, statistical analysis).Item Data Warehouse : Intelligent Management Decision Support(INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, 2004-02) Pandya, Shweta; Shroff, BhaumikAdvances in computer and networking technology have led to the introduction of very powerful hardware and software platforms that can collect, manage and distribute large amount of pertinent data. Data Warehousing is one of the most interesting and dynamic among the new technological transitions. It is a repository of subjectively selected and adapted operational data, which can successfully answer any ad hoc, complex, statistical or analytical queries and it provides means for implementing effective decision support system by utilizing data scattered all over the organization. The aim of the paper is to generate interest and understanding among the library and information professionals regarding the concept of data warehousing. Major characteristics, goal, structure, application and advantages of data warehousing are also described in detail.Item Data Warehousing and OLAP Technology for Knowledge Discovery(INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, 2004-02) Suman, AparajitaSince time immemorial, libraries have been generating services using the knowledge stored in various repositories to the users.
