Towards Metadata Completeness in National ETD Portals for Improved Discoverability
(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2023-11-17) Chisale, Adrian; Phiri, Lighton
Zambia has 61 registered Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) with the Higher Education Authority. In order to facilitate easy access to Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs), works are underway to implement a National ETD portal. The diversity of the ETD source IRs poses a challenge in ensuring that ETD metadata is of high quality, with respect to the completeness, adversely affecting discoverability of ETD digital objects. This paper outlines a study conducted to identify HEIs with functional IRs; empirically assess the relative quality of ETD metadata from HEI IRs and investigate potential ways of identifying sources of missing metadata elements. Questionnaires were distributed to 61 HEIs in order to identify HEIs with functional and interoperable IRs. In addition, ETD metadata from HEIs with functional IRs was harvested using the Open Archives Initiative for Metadata Harvesting protocol and subsequently analyzed in order to assess the metadata completeness. Finally, a combination of document analysis of policy documents and, additionally, content analysis of randomly sampled ETD manuscripts from HEIs with functional IRs was conducted in order to identify potential sources of missing metadata. Out of 61 HEIs, only 10 (16.1%) of HEIs in Zambia had implemented functional IRs. The analysis of ETD metadata indicates that there is generally non-compliance of ETD metadata to the ETD-MS metadata standard, the de facto metadata schema for ETDs developed by the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. In order to identify reliable sources of missing metadata elements, content analysis of policy documents was performed, alongside an analysis of randomly sampled ETD bitstreams. Potential sources of missing metadata from the ETD bitstream make it possible for automated extraction techniques to be employed to automatically generate missing metadata elements.

Role of ETD Repository in the University Libraries of Assam
(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2023-11-17) Pathak, Sukanya
One of the most crucial sources and custodians of knowledge and information have been assigned to theses and dissertations. They are the result of long-time engagement in research and hence are of significant authority. Earlier, theses and dissertations found less publication and visibility and hence remained out of reach for researchers of the next generation. Again, given the lack of preservation of the theses and dissertations in most cases it has been observed that such research found duplication without due mention of the original author. In response to this pressing issue, the UGC took a substantial initiative by releasing a notification on May 5, 2016, under the 'Minimum Standards & Procedure for Award of MPhil. /PhD Degree, Regulation, 2016,' which made it mandatory for researchers to electronically submit their theses and dissertations to their respective universities. These submissions are subsequently archived in an ETD repository, recognized in India as Shodhganga. Shodhganga the National Digital Repository of India enables the electronic archival of theses and dissertations for the quick availability among the research community and also prevents plagiarism by electronically detecting duplication through the anti-plagiarism software.

Open Access Repository and Availability of ETDs in Nepal
(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2023-11-17) Aryal, Jagadish Chandra
Most of the research work done around the globe as an academic mandate does not get published. Some of the researchers who publish their work in academic journals are not easily accessible to the general public due to their high subscription costs. Very few of them get published in an open-access repository accessible to all interested. Electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) are very important to the university students and other researchers because of their academic value. Despite its importance, the archived ETDs in the institutional repository of the universities abroad (western countries) are not accessible to the public. To fulfill this gap in scholarly communication, Nepali universities and some other institutions in Nepal have initiated digital archiving in an open-access medium. This paper tries to show the situation of digital repositories in Nepal. Ten major digital repositories of universities, research institutions, the United Nations Resource Centre in Nepal, and the digital repositories run by the organisations of Nepal government, as well as non-government organisations, have been selected for this study. They archive a variety of items including books, journal articles, book chapters, ETDs, reports, conference papers, and images while major collections in the university repositories are ETDs. Most of these repositories are open-access.

(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2023-11-17) Roy, Aditi; Ghosh, Saptarshi
Good metadata quality makes a record more discoverable, facilitating search and retrieval. In this study, three methods are used to determine the quality of metadata of Electronic Theses and Dissertations; these are - Marc Report Analysis of Metadata, Metadata Quality parameters suggested by data.europa.eu, and lastly, a java based pre-compiled program by Peter Király has been used in this study. This study provides a brief comparative account of Electronic Theses and Dissertation Metadata structure of Institutional Repositories and Libraries. The comparative analysis of each repository shows that the total number of the record count is much higher in the case of the libraries as it was downloaded using z39.50/ SRU client. In contrast, in the case of repositories, only four sets of data are harvested using OAI-PMH. The field 040$e=rda is absent throughout the records of the institutional repositories. However, the field is present in a few records of the library, i.e., the University of Colorado shows 930 occurrences out of 1000 records. The process of metadata quality analysis involves a combination of automated tools and human expertise, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of metadata attributes and relationships.
