Item Users' Perception Of Electronic Resources Of Assam Agricultural University (A.A.U), Jorhat: A Survey(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2018-11) Santanta Baruah; Ksh. Krishna DeviElectronic resources are becoming an integral part in day-to-day life as well as in academic field of higher educational institution. Nowadays, the users are increasingly depending on electronic resources for in different fields like educational, domestic or business purposes. The present study is focused on the use of electronic resources by the students of Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat (AAU). The survey method and random sampling technique has been used. The questionnaire tool has been used to collect the primary data where 150 questionnaires were distributed among different categories of the student. Equally 50 questionnaires per category has been distributed to Under Graduate (UG), Post Graduate (PG) and Ph.D students categories of AAU. Out of 150 questionnaires, 104 duly filled-in questionnaires were received from the respondents. From the study, the finding revealed that 83.65% of the total number of respondents areaware of e-resources.Item Social Responsibility Of Academic Library: A Study On Role Of College Libraries In Assam(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2018-11) Dhrubajit DasAcademic libraries are rich in terms of resources and infrastructure in comparison to the public libraries in Assam. The resources and infrastructure of the college libraries in Assam can effectively use in providing community service in the locality. National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in its assessment guidelines clearly mentioned about the social institutional responsibility of the colleges. The college libraries as a part of its social responsibility should engage in activities such as extension of reading facilities to the general public and allowing them to use existing physical infrastructure, Internet facility, e-resources access facility of the college library. Extension of these facilities of the college libraries will definitely benefit the needy peoples of the society. The paper intends to identify the availability of resources and other infrastructural facilities in some randomly selected college libraries in Assam and observes how these large quantities of resources be effectively make open to the other needy people living in the society.Item Use Of Open Access Journals Among The Research Scholars: A Case Study Of Gauhati University(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2018-11) Banani DasThe process of delivering information is changing with the advent of World Wide Web. The cost of subscription journals is increasing at a rapid pace and it becomes impossible for any library to purchase all the document of the users need. So the open access is the only solution to solve this problem. It ensures the dissemination of information to all level of people without any price and permission barrier. This study is an attempt to find out the use of open access journals among the scholars of Gauhati University, the problems that are faced by the research scholars in accessing journals, importance of open access journals, their support for the open access movement and their satisfaction level on the availability of the open access journals over the internet. The study aims to help in establishing open access policy for the library to educate their researcher.Item Teachers' Awareness And Participation In Institutional Repository Movement At Assam University, Silchar(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2018-11) Susmita Das; Mukut SarmahUniversities play the prime role in Research and Development (R&D) of any country. The teachers of the university thus bear the responsibility to generate more and more knowledge resources to keep the nation in the forefront. Institutional Repositories (IRs) are thus being created to keep and store the intellectual assets of any university or a particular organization. It keeps the materials in central place so that anyone from anywhere can access and use these resources. But little interest among the teachers has greatly affected the main goal of IR success. The present paper deals with the results of a survey conducted among the teachers of Assam University which represents their awareness about IRs. The present paper also highlights the issues related to university based repository. The results showed that though the university has implemented a functional IR but there are still some hesitations among teachers regarding IR participation and use. The researchers thus suggested for organizing more and more awareness programmes on IR and its advantages so that more teachers get familiar and get comfortable to use it.Item Academic Libraries as Social Hub with Special Reference to North Eastern Region(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2018-11) Rath, PravakarLibraries in higher educational institutions have under gone a great transformation from an automated to virtual environment using Internet and social media with an objective to enhance the reach of library resources and services among the academic fraternity. The present paper emphasises on the importance of academic libraries as social hub with special reference to North Eastern region by using social media tools. The author presents an overview of higher education in NE region and the libraries of centrally funded institutions currently providing various resources and services through Internet and social media. This study provides an efficient way of using Social media tools and how it affects theLibrary User Community.Item Perception Of Open Access Publishing And Scholarly Communication Among The Faculties And Research Scholars Of Tripura University: A Study(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2018-11) Jeshika Tripura; Mithu Anjali GayanThis paper is an attempt to find perceptions of Open Access Publishing by faculties and research scholars of Tripura University through a survey using questionnaire method. The questionnaire was administered to 100 randomly selected faculty members and research scholars out of whom 78 have responded and the response rate is 78%. It is found that 69(88.46%) accepted that they are aware of Open Access; male (91.83%) faculties and research scholars are more aware of Open Access Publishing than that of female (82.75%) faculties and research scholars; 65 (83.33%) stated that they have used Open Access journal; (76%) respondents prefer and use both Open access journal; 29(38.16%) prefer OA journals because it is accessible from anywhere followed by 26 (34.21%) prefer it as it is freely available; 11 (14.47%) prefer it solely because they support OA publishing; maximum respondents also gave their view that they do not want submit their research to OA journals because they think OA journals are not always peer reviewed and not reliable; highest number of respondents agree (47%) to the fact that it ensure receiving of more citation; highest number of respondents (47%) agree to the statement; maximum respondents 43(55.13%) agree to the statement that OA ensures faster publication of their research. The results found from the study will help the university library in formulating policies regarding open access resources and institutional repositories.Item Equipping Library Professionals for Imparting Information Literacy(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2018-11) Laloo, BikikaInformation explosion or the proliferation in the amount of information and variety of information sources, has made it even more vital today for individuals to develop information literacy skills. Libraries play a major role in imparting information literacy skills to their clients. This paper addresses two aspects of the topic at hand. First - that the library staff need to be information literate themselves in order to ably impart information literacy skills to their clients. Second - that imparting information literacy is multi-dimensional and that libraries and their staff need to approach the issue accordingly.Item Digital Conversion and Preservation of old Ph.D. Theses: A Study at Central Library, IIT Kharagpur(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2018-11) M.Manivannan; Dr. B.SutradharThe purpose of this paper is to describe how rare library materials and documents are being preserved for long-term usage and archived at the Central Library, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) and focused on the technical requirements, guidelines for digitization, and digital preservation of old library materials. The paper explains levels of the digitization process and levels of the digital preservation of old Ph.D. theses submitted at the library, also to discuss the digitization infrastructure and software used. The paper shows that the workflow and steps involved in the conducting digitization and digital preservation project at the library. The information contained in the library materials such as rare documents, theses, and other similar old documents can be lost forever unless there are alternative arrangements for digitally converting and or digitizing them. The technological advancement is providing suitable alternatives for digitization and its preservation for the library materials. Before starting up a digitization project, the library should have sufficient funds to acquire infrastructures such as a high-end scanner, computer hardware, other related software, and trained computer-human resources. It can also be noted that for the successful completion of this project, must train the administrator and staff involved in the project. Digital preservation of rare and old documents in an Institutional Digital Repository (IDR) can provide an immediate response to a search, getting information on time, and search enhances the researchers’ efficiencies. The IDR supports mechanisms to store, retrieve and manage the digital assets.Item Use Of Social Networking Sites By Research Scholars Of Dibrugarh University: A Case Study(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2018-11) Trinayan BorgohainIn this 21st century’s changing environment, the worldwide population has seen a new wave of interpersonal communication in the form of social networking sites. With the rapid growth and popularity of social networking sites among the people of this era has given a new way of communication. This dynamic change provides the research scholars of the present period a new form of communication for their research work. The present study is to find out how the research scholars of Dibrugarh University use social networking sites for their research work purpose. This study also examines the personal and professional impact of social networking sites on research work. A structured questionnaire was designed and personally distributed among 150 respondents. Most of them are using these sites for their personal and a few used for research study. ResearchGate, Academia.edu and Facebook are the most preferred social networking sites for research purposes.Item Open Access Through Repository : Scenario In University Libraries Of North East India(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2018-11) Rk Sofia Devi; Ch. Ibohal SinghThe purpose of the present study is to highlight the prevailing scenario of open access through institutional repository by the university libraries of North East India and to explore the place of institutional repositories in providing open access. The methodology adopted for the study include:personal visit to the libraries concerned, interviewing with the working LIS professionals and using a semi- structured questionnaire as tool for the data collection. Taking into account20 universities of the region, the study mainly emphasised upon the strategies of the universities towards building such repositories and making available the data resources to enhance accessibility in the open environment.As the major findings of the study show, many of the university libraries in the region are found to initiate strategies to build IRs using DSpace though they face dearth of skilled professionals and keeping archiving policy optional, while ETD and institutional publications are making available in the IRs. The study also suggests that universities in North East India should come forward to support OA movement.Item A Study On Disaster Management Initiatives And Planning In Academic Libraries Of North East India With Special |Reference To Assam: A Survey(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2018-11) Manoj Kumar Sinha; Saroj Kumar MandalThe first part of the paper explores the conceptual framework of the various aspects of the disaster, natural calamities and its impact on libraries and discusses the probable steps in overcoming the impact of disasters on library resources. A well thought disaster management plan needs to be outlined and suitable strategies should be planned for affective implementation in protecting the academic libraries of this North Eastern Region in general and Assam in particular. For the present study, the survey method of research has been adopted and data has been collected from the college and university librarians / LIS professionals using a self-designed questionnaire. The administration of questionnaire has also been ascertained by observation and conducting informal interview of few librarians / LIS professionals for their view and opinion towards awareness of various types of disasters and steps taken by them to overcome the problems for implementation of disaster management plan in academic libraries or libraries of higher educational institutions. For carrying out this study purposive sampling technique has been adopted. This study has been conducted for selected libraries and responses have been collected from March 2018 to July 2018. The data has been analysed and tabulated using MS-Excel and results were shown in tabular and graphical format. The study reveals that the awareness and preparedness to counter the problem of disasters arises out of sudden natural calamities is poor and there is need to sensitise common people and LIS professionals to make them aware with the probable disaster management techniques and measures to face the challenges and overcome the situation. At the end the paper, the authors put forwarde several suggestions and recommendations for implementation of the precautionary measure to plan and implement Disaster Management Strategies / Plan to save the academic libraries/ learning resource centres/ public libraries from the menace and havoc of regular heavy rains, floods, earthquake, fire and terrorist attack etc on the basis of suggestions given by the respondents and from the authors side.Item Students Satisfaction On The Environment Of The College Library And Information Centre: A Case Study With Special Reference To Jorhat District Of Assam(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2018-11) Anup Ch. The Scopus bibliographic and citation database is used to retrieve ten years data of Utkal University, Bhubaneswar with a suitable search strategy. A total number of 1091 documents has been retrieved and analyzed using different indicators like: year wise contribution of research work, preferred document types of publications, ten most productive authors, subject wise contributions, most productive authors, preferred collaborating institution/country and most productive journals of the University. The e-journal facility provided under INFLIBNET has brought another opportunity for the university libraries to serve their users with high quality content. E-journal consortium of INFLIBNET has been introduced in Gauhati University since 2004. Although research study has already identified that at the initial years the usage of the e-journal was not satisfactory but with the fulfillment of the different identified conditions of the earlier study, there has been a drastic change in the usage of the e-journal facility. This change needs to be further evaluated to identify the real picture of the usage. The paper identifies the trend of usage of e-journal facility at Gauhati University. Raspberry Pi is one such constructive innovation which has transformed the landscape for programmers to gadget lovers. Because it is so powerful, flexible and adaptable, it became very popular worldwide.Librarians around the globe have also greeted this new tech tool enthusiastically, and are experimenting in different projects. With the emergence of ICT, libraries in future will be more content rich, more user-friendly, more interactive and digital in all aspects, but only having number of servers or collection of E-Books servers doesn’t make digitally future pro of unless a fully paperless and eco-friendly workspace is developed. This articleis aimed at library professionals who are new to Raspberry Pi and it attempts to elaborate the use of this miniature marvel in institutional and public libraries using a case study at IIAS Library.Item Use And Impact Of Social Networking Sites (Sns) Among The Student Community Of Assam Agricultural University (A.A.U), Jorhat, Assam: A Survey(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2018-11) Pooja Buragohain; Ksh. Krishna DeviSocial Networking Sites (SNS) gives us enormous capability to provide services in real time. The paper focused on finding out the opportunities provided by the SNSs to the student as well as the benefits and the challenges faced by the student community while retrieving information and for the purpose of knowing the awareness and usage pattern of SNS by the student community of A.A.U, Jorhat. The paper highlights the important findings in respect to the use and impact of SNS. A self-made questionnaire was constructed and administered on a sample of 150 student community pursuing their degree in A.A.U, Jorhat. Random sampling technique was used. The result of the study showed that all of the students used WhatsApp and they used SNS through their smart phone for both academic as well as for entertainment purposes. Social Networking Sites had both positive and negative impacts on student community.Item Status Of Children Libraries In Assam: An Analytical Study(2018-11) Kishore Kalita; Tilak HazarikaAn aim of the study is to visualize current scenario of children libraries in Assam. The study has been carried out on a sample of twelve full-fledged children libraries drawn from different parts of the state using judgmental sampling method. Number of staff strength in the libraries found ranges between 1-4. Books collection in the libraries is in the range of 12000 to 15000 in two, 6000-9000 in two, 3000-6000 in three, while five libraries having less than 3000 collection. Average number of magazines in the libraries is found to be four. Children encyclopaedias are available in 2 libraries with one title each. CDs and DVDs are available in four libraries with highest 38 in one. Video game playing facilities are available in 2 libraries, TV sets in 5, computers in 6 libraries of which four with Internet facility. The availability of other learning aids viz. the Kindle Reader, Globe, Maps and Charts and other materials are there in all the libraries but in very poor in numbers in comparison to the number of daily users. Only two libraries are found to be using Library Management Softwares viz. Koha and SOUL. Number of registered users varies from 75 to 590, while daily users in the range of 40 to nearly 300. It is observed that most of the relatively well-organized libraries are in the urban and semi-urban areas. A note of suggestions has been lined up for betterment of the status of the children libraries.Item A Novel Study To Determine Fake News Quotient: Perception Based Study Among Lis Students(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2018-11) Deepjyoti Kalita; Dipen DekaFake news can be an image, a video or an imitative news article often designed to misguide masses through wrong information. Fake news identification through normal observation is not an easy task. It needs thorough observation of facts and the process itself requires some factual steps. Public discussion forums are always empowering citizens by giving some identification properties which are often associated with fake news and also telling the follow up steps when they find some doubtful news items. The current study is an evaluative process to measure the ability of library and information science(LIS) students to identify fake news. Nine properties were identified and clubbed as Questions on Fake news Identification(QFI), based student’s awareness level to those points, a resultant QFI quotient was measured out through a systematically designed process for the study. Similarly, eight activities were noted out and clubbed as Questions on Fake news Tackling Activities (QFTA), a QFTA quotient was measured out following the similar process of QFI quotient. The average QFI quotient and QFTA quotient of LIS students were 0.67 and 0.73 respectively. A significant correlation of 0.570 between QFI quotient and QFTA quotient helped to conclude that LIS students have a strong ability to identify and stop the spreading of fake news.
