With this changing environment of collection of library resources, the greatest challenge in front of libraries is to find out the best way to present, promote and make accessible the growing collections of heterogeneous resources. Libraries are required to look for search and discovering tools to provide seamless access to their resources. This article introduces basic philosophy of federated search and discovery tools. It elaborates on technological tools, techniques and protocols that are used for developing federated search and discovery tools. The article narrates disadvantages of federated search solutions and discovery tools as compared to conducting a search directly on the interface of primary database. The Concept of open URL as a technology used for link-resolving and finding “appropriate copy” is discussed briefly. Lastly, the article describes contemporary federated search solutions and discovery tools that are available commercially or as open source solution with their merits, demerits and comparative performance.Item Use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in Research and Development Libraries in Karnataka: A Study(Inflibnet Center, 2011-03-02) G, Maruthi; R, Rajashekara G; M, Nagaraja Shastry GThe advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has made a tremendousimprovement and change almost in all walks of life. Especially the magnetic word information technology has been changed in all corners of the global areas. Present paper presents the results of a research study conducted to survey the use of ICT in R & D libraries. It describes about library staff, classification & cataloguing method followed status of digital library,infrastructural facilities and barriers in use of ICT in R & D libraries. They generally do not cater to the needs of beginners who want to develop software in open source environment. Present paper is an attempt to enable Integrated Library Automation Software (ILAP) Koha, as a digital library especially koha version 3 in the view that koha can support digital library functionality.Item Web-Based Information Retrieval Pattern of Medical Students(Inflibnet Centre, 2011-03-02) K, Mohamed Haneefa; M, Jina EThe purpose of this study was to assess the web-based information retrieval pattern of the students of Calicut Medical College, Kerala. Structured questionnaires were employed to collect data from a representative sample of 100 MBBS students. The study found that a majority of the students often use the web for communication and to get general information and recent advances in Medicine. A good number of the students use web-mail and social networking sites very frequently. All the students use simple search methods for accessing the web. Google is the most preferred search engine followed by Yahoo. Only a very few of the students use e-journals and databases. Lack of training/orientation, lack of computer infrastructure, lack of fulltext e-journals and low Internet backbone speed are the major reasons of underutilization of web-based information resources. The findings of this study would assist medical institutions in India to develop strategies and policies that could make better use of web-based information resources for medical education and research.Item Information Literacy for Teacher Education(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) Gandhe, Charudatta AchyutIn the present information society, the world is changing into global village, classrooms are changing into virtual class rooms and libraries are changing to information centers. Students are more technology oriented and so the whole teaching-learning process. The students are expected to learn beyond the syllabus and teachers should play a role of facilitator. This is due to advent of information and communication technology. Every aspect of education is changed. e-learning, e-resources, etc. are the common words. Everyone in the education system is depend upon the information. As a result of it, we are facing new challenges like information overload, information poverty, etc. To face this challenges the librarians and educationist must think collaboratively to impart information literacy among the students so as to survive in this information age. The teachers should be information literate so that they can implement the information literacy programme in their schools. But there is a need to impart the information literacy skills among the teachers during their pre service teacher education. This paper tries to suggest a model and a draft programme with teaching and learning techniques which will be suitable to impart information literacy skills among the teachers during their pre-service teacher education in India. And it demands collaborative efforts of librarians, teachers, educators, educationists and policy makers.Item Usage of Electronic Resources Available Under UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium by Assam University Library Users(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) Sinha, Manoj Kumar; Singha, Gauri; Sinha, BimalThe traditional functions of libraries had undergone various changes in present century and E-Resources have great importance in libraries and amongst the library users. The present study has been undertaken with an attempt to evaluate the usage pattern of electronic resources made available in the Assam University Library under the UGC- INFONET E-Journals/ Digital Library Consortium of UGC/INFLIBNET amongst the research scholars and teachers of Northeastern Region of India with special reference to Assam University, Silchar. The faculty, research scholars and students are mainly drawn from different parts of North Eastern States and few from other parts of the country which represent truly cosmopolitan population. For that purpose, survey method has been adopted by the investigators, which comprises of administration of questionnaire, Observation of the participants, and interview of some of the participants for knowing the opinion of the respondents in respect of usage of electronic resources (e-journals/e-books/databases) for their academic and research activities. The self designed questionnaire comprising of 15 questions has been distributed amongst the randomly selected samples .The samples comprises of faculty members, research scholars,UG/PG Students and officers / staff. The filled up questionnaires have been collected from the respondents for the data analysis and interpretations. On the basis of filled up questionnaire the data has been analysed and tabulated using SPSS Software. For data analysis percentage technique, has been adopted. Due to paucity of space important results findings have been enumerated in brief. The present work was carried out during July- December 2009. Therefore the present investigation is delimited to the randomly selected population of Assam University Library Users who are regularly visiting Assam University Library and using the Internet for accessing to the e-resources available under the UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortia of INFLIBNET/ UGC. The questionnaire was distributed to 350 samples, out of which 319 respondents have responded. The same study may be carried out on the larger section of population covering other universities of North Eastern Region of India to get more generalized and authentic findings. The findings of the present study may be taken as the preliminary findings from a pilot study. The paper highlights the important survey findings in respect of Internet Awareness, Internet Use Pattern and attitude of library users towards the electronic resources, which have been made available to them under UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium. Besides this, some faced by the respondents have also been discussed and few suggestions and recommendations have also been enumerated in brief..Item Federated Search and Discovery Tools(Inflibnet Center, 2011-03-02) Vastrad, Gayatri; Bharathy, Jaya; Kumar, P DharaniThe article describes how federated search helps the users to find resources across library collections. Federated search is essen-tially an umbrella search often utilizing, as far as possible, the search facilities already offered by each library resource. Federated searching, also known as meta searching, broadcast searching, cross searching, and a variety of other names, is the ability to search multiple information resources from a single interface and return an integrated set of results. These targets include the library’s collection of books, software, databases and online public access catalogs.Item Publication Productivity of Social Scientists in the Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram: A Bibliometric Analysis(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) Sudhier, K G; S, Abhila IThe study analysed the research productivity of social scientists at the Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Thiruvananthapuram, during 19998-2008. The paper gives a summary and review of the various research evaluation studies of institutions and disciplines. There were 599 research articles published by the CDS researchers, including 38.23% journal articles, 23.54% chapters in books and 15.03% working papers. The highest number of publications was in the year 2008.Kerala’s developmental issues (32%) and industry, technology & development (26%) were the leading areas of research during the period of study. Authorship pattern revealed that majority of the contributions were singe- authored (56.59%) and the remaining were multi author contributions (43.41%). The degree of authorship collaboration is found to be 0.43. More than 66% of journal articles published are in Indian journals and 33.19% are published in foreign journals. Economic and Political Weekly, contributes the highest number of articles, 79 (34.50%) followed by Indian journal of Labour Economics with 7 (3.06%). The journal distribution pattern of the CDS publications does not fit the Bradford’s distribution pattern.Item Return on Investment (ROI) from Libraries(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) Kumar, H AnilThe paper looks at the concept of ROI (Return On Investment) in the context of libraries. In light of the dynamic environment, challenging financial pressures and increasing need for accountability have in all forced libraries to prove their worth in terms of outcomes, impact and returns. The paper draws upon various studies and approaches in dealing with this relevant and important topical theme. The paper focuses on academic libraries and concludes that ROI of each library will be different depending on the settings in which it exists. Here we useUML, an efficient Object Oriented Software engineering tools, to represent different component of this system.Item Citation Analysis of Journal of Oilseed Research(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) Kumar, Surendra; Kumar, SThe paper analyses 8093 citations given in the Journal of Oilseed Research (JOR) published during 1993 to 2004 (V.10-21). Out of 8093 citations 5642 are given in main articles and 2551 in short communications of the JOR. It also analyses types of documents cited and identifies core journals. The paper also covers the analyses of authorship patterns of citations along with calculation of collaboration coefficient. Geographical distribution of cited references has also been analyzed. The paper concludes that only 20 core periodicals can cover more than 50% references and also indicates that collaborative
