Item Authorship Pattern and Degree of Collaboration in Indian Chemistry Literature(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) Pradhan, Pallab; Panda, Saroj; Chandrakar, RajeshThe study presents the trends in authorship pattern and author’s collaborative research in Indian chemistry literature with a sample of 53,977 articles downloaded from SCI-Expanded database in Web of Science during the period 2000-2009. The average number of authors per article is 3.55 %. In the study the degree of collaboration (C) during the overall 10 years (2000-2009) is 0.03, but the year wise degree of collaboration is almost same in all the years of mean value 0.97. In the 10 years of period, the multi authorship articles are higher and predominant on single authorship. The study found that the researchers in chemistry are keen towards teamresearch or group research rather than solo research.Item Citation Analysis Of University News Journal(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) S, Jadhav Vandana; S, Khaparde Vaishali; M, Shelke SantoshCitation analysis of all the journal articles published in the journal ‘University News’ from January 2004 to December 2008 is carried out in 5 volume and 261 issues in its 1949. The citations taken for the study are 5968. The maximum number of citations were referred in 2007 to 2008 that is 2950 (50.6%), the most cited type of document is book 1549 (26.39%), the maximum number of citations were from India that is 3675 (62.61%), in authorship pattern single author citations are dominant that others that is 3011 (51.30%).Item Publication Productivity of Social Scientists in the Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram: A Bibliometric Analysis(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) Sudhier, K G; S, Abhila IThe study analysed the research productivity of social scientists at the Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Thiruvananthapuram, during 19998-2008. The paper gives a summary and review of the various research evaluation studies of institutions and disciplines. There were 599 research articles published by the CDS researchers, including 38.23% journal articles, 23.54% chapters in books and 15.03% working papers. The highest number of publications was in the year 2008.Kerala’s developmental issues (32%) and industry, technology & development (26%) were the leading areas of research during the period of study. Authorship pattern revealed that majority of the contributions were singe- authored (56.59%) and the remaining were multi author contributions (43.41%). The degree of authorship collaboration is found to be 0.43. More than 66% of journal articles published are in Indian journals and 33.19% are published in foreign journals. Economic and Political Weekly, contributes the highest number of articles, 79 (34.50%) followed by Indian journal of Labour Economics with 7 (3.06%). The journal distribution pattern of the CDS publications does not fit the Bradford’s distribution pattern.Item Structure and Functions of Citation Index(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) Kumar, Shailendra; Singh, ManishaThe article explains the concept of citation, citation index and the process of citation indexing in the present environment. Various components of the citation index such as citation index and its subparts (anonymous and patent cited index), source index, permuterm subject index, corporate index along with its sub-parts (geographic and organization index) and journal citation report are explained in brief. Further the structure, working, arrangement of these components of citation index are explained in detail with necessary and self explanatory sample entries which gives a clear idea about all these aspects. Citing and cited half-life are calculated and derived for a journal to understand the functioning and value of half-life of a journal. Functions of citation index are discussed to understand the various applications of research indicators and research trends in the subjectsItem Indian Contributions to World Soybean Research: Measurement of Research Productivity of Soybean Scientists(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) Jain, Keerti Bala; Kumar, SThe paper studies the measurement of research productivity of Indian scientists contributing to world soybean research for the period 1989-2008 based on the data available in the International Crop CD database. The paper measured the publication share of India in the world publication on soybean, its activity index, growth rate and doubling time, analysed the authorship pattern, various statistical distributions of authorship like mean, variance, binomial distributions, negative binomial distributions, geometric distributions; collaboration coefficient and collaboration index, prolific authors and their dominance factor, applicability of Lotka’s law, etc. The paper reveals that India has 2nd rank in research publication with 13.64% share in the world. The activity index of India decreases gradually. The growth rate has also decrease gradually and correspondingly doubling time has increased. The paper reveals high degree of collaboration with 93.10% contributions of joint authorship. The average collaboration coefficient is 0.931 and average collaboration index value is 3.115. Lotka’s Law is still found applicable in the study. A well-structured 95 questionnaires were distributed among the 167 PGDM students of management to find out the use of online resources of the information centers. The present study demonstrates and elaborates the various aspects of uses of online resources and services provided by the institute library, user’s awareness about ICT/Digital Information, frequency and purposes of visit, Linking patterns, type of e-information, uses of search engine, problems , user satisfaction within information services, and utility of online resources. Findings and suggestions of the survey are given at the end of the articles.Item Use of Information Sources by the Soil Scientists in Kerala: A Case Study of the Citations in the Master’s Degree Theses of the Kerala Agricultural University(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) Raman, Sarala; Varghese, MThe Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, College of Agriculture, Vellayani, Thiruvananthapuram, one of the constituent colleges of the Kerala Agricultural University, has been offering M Sc Degree in Soil Science since 1963. As part of the programme the students have to carry out research on an approved topic and submit the thesis. During the period of 1963 to 2010, 129 theses have been submitted in soil science. A study of the citations in a sample of 18 theses, selected at 10 year intervals is carried out with a view to ascertaining the characteristics of the information sources used by the scholars. The 18 theses selected as sample, altogether carries 1794 references distributed among different categories such as monographs and reference books (8.58%), papers in learned journals (68.84%), conference papers/ proceedings (4.12%), government publications (4.35%), theses (6.4%) and other (7.69%) which include technical reports, statistical bulletins and research reports. Analysing the age of cited items, the obsolescence rate of literature in soil science was calculated. Median citation age is found to be 11.13 years. Chronological variation in the various characteristics of the cited literature was also examined.Item Maximising the Value and Return on Investment (ROI) of Special Libraries: A Case Study of INMAS Library(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) Vij, Rajeev; Soni, Navin Kumar SThe paper examines the concept of return on investment (ROI) in the context of special libraries. The aim of ROI is to establish a relationship between the special library and its host institution that could be expressed in quantifiable terms and which would satisfy administrators and demonstrate the library’s economic value to the institution. The value of a library to its parent institution is difficult to measure. Many different methods have been used to measure value, including return on investment (ROI), contingent valuation, and other explicit and implicit measures — essentially derived from library services and user satisfaction. This article describes major functions, activities and services of the INMAS library. It briefly touches upon both print and e-resources subscribed by INMAS library. The article outlines activities undertaken by INMAS library which are leading to cost saving and cost recovery, thereby, increasing return on investment (ROI).This article elaborates on strategies used by INMAS library for effective promotion- for increased utilization of its resources, which shall in turn result in increased research output in form of various products and services and a better ROI. Lastly, this article outlines future endeavors of the INMAS library which shall ultimately result in increased for the library.Item Web Resource Service: Usage of Open Access Journals by the Academicians of Autonomous Colleges in Dakshina Kannada-A Survey(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) K, Vishala B; Bhandi, M.K.In the digital environment the academicians’ interest are moving towards accessing and using Electronic journals for their day to day academic activities. These are one of the main means used by researchers for scholarly communication. They play an important role in the creation and communication of knowledge. There are thousands of open access titles available. The promising open access movement is opening alternate channels for the distribution of scholarly work. As the availability of open access journals increasing, accessing to these journals is also increasing gradually. No doubt the digital information is becoming popular among users in almost all the libraries. Considering the importance of open access journals the research study has been undertaken to provide awareness to the faculty members of five Autonomous Colleges in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. The study result would provide library professionals and academicians with clear insights into the benefits of using open access journals. The study result reveals that the majority respondents are unaware of open access journals and among those who uses electronic journals majority of them are using open access journals for their academic purposes. Through this study the researcher provided awareness to the to the faculty members regarding various open access initiatives available in India and abroad.Item Citation Analysis Of Doctoral Studies in Marine Geology(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) Prasad, G Siva; Rao, G A Prasda; Rao, K VenkataReports a study of 52 doctoral theses in Marine Geology submitted to Andhra University during the period 1954-2009. A total of 9,453 citations were analysed for identifying their bibliographic form, authorship pattern, ranking of cited journals and subject wise distributions of citations. The finding reveals that nearly 71.27% citations were from journals and 13.51% from books. The subject wise distribution of theses reveals that sedimentology, Geology, Marine Geology, Oceanography, Geochemistry and General Science and forms 73.16% more than half of the total theses submitted during the period. USA, India and UK are contributes 7875 (83.77%) citations. Out of 8093 citations 5642 are given in main articles and 2551 in short communications of the JOR. It also analyses types of documents cited and identifies core journals. The paper also covers the analyses of authorship patterns of citations along with calculation of collaboration coefficient. Geographical distribution of cited references has also been analyzed. The present study has been undertaken with an attempt to evaluate the usage pattern of electronic resources made available in the Assam University Library under the UGC- INFONET E-Journals/ Digital Library Consortium of UGC/INFLIBNET amongst the research scholars and teachers of Northeastern Region of India with special reference to Assam University, Silchar. The faculty, research scholars and students are mainly drawn from different parts of North Eastern States and few from other parts of the country which represent truly cosmopolitan population. For that purpose, survey method has been adopted by the investigators, which comprises of administration of questionnaire, Observation of the participants, and interview of some of the participants for knowing the opinion of the respondents in respect of usage of electronic resources (e-journals/e-books/databases) for their academic and research activities. The self designed questionnaire comprising of 15 questions has been distributed amongst the randomly selected samples .The samples comprises of faculty members, research scholars,UG/PG Students and officers / staff. The filled up questionnaires have been collected from the respondents for the data analysis and interpretations. On the basis of filled up questionnaire the data has been analysed and tabulated using SPSS Software. For data analysis percentage technique, has been adopted. Due to paucity of space important results findings have been enumerated in brief. The present work was carried out during July- December 2009. Therefore the present investigation is delimited to the randomly selected population of Assam University Library Users who are regularly visiting Assam University Library and using the Internet for accessing to the e-resources available under the UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortia of INFLIBNET/ UGC. The questionnaire was distributed to 350 samples, out of which 319 respondents have responded. The same study may be carried out on the larger section of population covering other universities of North Eastern Region of India to get more generalized and authentic findings. The findings of the present study may be taken as the preliminary findings from a pilot study. The paper highlights the important survey findings in respect of Internet Awareness, Internet Use Pattern and attitude of library users towards the electronic resources, which have been made available to them under UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium. Besides this, some faced by the respondents have also been discussed and few suggestions and recommendations have also been enumerated in brief..Item Return on Investment (ROI) from Libraries(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) Kumar, H AnilThe paper looks at the concept of ROI (Return On Investment) in the context of libraries. In light of the dynamic environment, challenging financial pressures and increasing need for accountability have in all forced libraries to prove their worth in terms of outcomes, impact and returns. The paper draws upon various studies and approaches in dealing with this relevant and important topical theme. The paper focuses on academic libraries and concludes that ROI of each library will be different depending on the settings in which it exists. It is important to study the settings and then clearly envisage the measures of returnes of each library.Item Plagiarism and Copyright Violation: A Need of Information Literacy Framework towards Ethical Use of Information(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) More, Trupti; Shelar, VandanaPlagiarism is an important ethical issue, but many researchers are still not aware of its seriousness. It is a general observation that plagiarism implies just copying or borrowing another’s work and original ideas. Terms such as ‘copying’ and ‘borrowing’ can misguide readers from the seriousness of this cognizable offense and lead them towards copyright violations. Both the teacher/guide and the librarian can play key role in reducing plagiarism by guiding students on how to use and cite proper sources of information through information literacy programs. This paper discusses the issue of plagiarism along with examples from the field of Arts and Humanities, and anti-plagiarism initiatives taken in India. The author suggests that to some extent plagiarism can be avoided with an information literacy programme, and this paper attempts to present information on this literacy framework.Item Information Literacy Initiatives in Sri Lankan University Libraries(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) Ranasinghe, WMTD; Siriwardana, A SInformation literacy (IL) which is described as the ability to recognize when information is needed, and to be able to locate and evaluate the appropriate information and use it effectively, have become prerequisite for all levels of education including higher education. Objective of this study is to examine to what extent the IL is practiced in university libraries in Sri Lanka. It studies the effectiveness of existing user education (UE) programs as well as IL programs in 15 national university libraries in Sri Lanka. The survey questionnaire is used as the primary data collection instrument and the findings of the study are discussed in this paper. Study revealed that all the responded university libraries (73%) are conducting UE programs and only 63% out of them have introduced IL programs. However, it was identified that majority of these IL programs are only extensions of existing UE programs and as a result, no proper contribution can be expected by them on the improvement of IL skills among user community. Suggestionsare made to overcome this issue and the study has emphasized the need for a national policyframework on IL skills development.Item Information Literacy Competency: A Study of Bioscience Students of Kuvempu University(INFLIBNET Centre, 2011-03-02) Biradar, B S; G, SwapnaInformation Literacy (IL) is an essential requirement for students in higher education institutions. Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education was produced and developed by Association of College and Research Library (ACRL) of United States in 2000. It consists of five standards and twenty two performance indicators. Present study focuses on IL competency among the Bioscience students of Kuvempu University. This paper highlights some of the important facets of IL such as student’s ability in determining and accessing the needed information, abilityto identify, select and evaluate information sources and ability to summarise, synthesis and validate information sources. Further to know student is ability in understanding economic, legal, social and ethical use of information.Item Information Seeking Behaviour of Students in Digital Environment: A Case Study(INFLIBNET Centre, 2012-03-02) Bhatia, Jaspal Kaur; P, Venkata RaoThe paper presents the results of a survey of the information seeking behaviour of students at Dev Samaj College, Chandigarh. The purpose of the survey was to explore the use of information technology by the college students for seeking information and to know how they access e-resources. The study made an effort to determine the sources of accessing e-resources in particular. A questionnaire was randomly circulated to one hundred students, who visited the library. The overall response rate was 64%. It was revealed that less than fifty percent of the respondents were not aware about e-resources. It was found that the students of the College use search engines as a major source to access e-resources for their information needs and for the purpose of updating knowledge on their subjects of interest. In order to overcome the hindrances in accessing the eresources, the study recommends awareness programmes for the students and to provide training on web searching and retrieval skills.
