Item Open Library And Librarianship(Inflibnet center, 2008-11-06) Joute, ZomuanaThe paper is concerned about defining an open library, its technology, components, what it will have and provide with respect to the case study of www.openlibrary.org. The paper also concern about application of new technologies in the library, which resulted rapid increases and changes in the traditional functions and services of libraries, and the role and nature of works of library profession and the librarianship. The system of information processing, accessing, retrieving, and dissemination had been dramatically changed librarianship. Library had also been transformed into new open source center and open library, virtual library,. In such libraries, the librarianship had also been dramatically changed; qualities and competencies on the part of library management should also be improved. The Paper also discusses the necessity of DSpace Digital Library Software for Digital Library Initiatives and OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) in Open Archives Initiative.Item Preservation Of Archives: A Case Study Of Bangladesh National Archives(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Mezbah- ul-Islam, Muhammed; Akter, RowshonNow-a-days, while a mature system of preservation and conservation (PAC) technology and methodology exists world wide to achieve the systematic PAC of world’s cultural heritage, the PAC programs of Bangladesh National Archives (the custodian of Bangladesh Government’s records) have excluded the same provisions to sustain the usable life of it’s resources. In this circumstance, this study seeks to articulate the current PAC status of archives in Bangladesh National Archives, and examine the barriers that have hindered the development of fullfledged PAC program for them. Finally some recommendations have been put forward at the consideration of Bangladesh National Archives so that it can employ the minimum technologies for proper care of its resources and become gradually able to adopt latest technologies for the preservation of manual archives together with the development of a national digital repository of archives.Item Prospects of Open Source Software in LIS Area of Assam(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Singh, Sanjay Kumar; Deka, Prasanta KumarThe choice of library management programme is constituted by social, economic and or political factors that result in selection of a system that is not suitable for the library requirements, characteristics and functions. Open Source Software or OSS has revolutionised the modus operandi of library software for library automation. OSS is quickly becoming a solution, owing to the freedom to copy, modify and distribute it and freedom from contracts as well as for greater opportunities for interoperability with other application. The paper mainly discusses about different OSS. It is a relatively new idea for library automation. People often advocate OSS because it is free. Some of the selected OSS is highlighted. The UNISWA Library has taken a step forward for building up an institutional repository of its own. The purpose of this paper is to document UNISWA Library experiences in developing its Institutional Repository. It will also describes how UNISWA Library planned to set up its institutional repository. The main aim is to create a permanent record of the institution’s scholarly output in digital format, and to make the Repository globally and openly accessible.Item Open Courseware: A Unique Opportunity for India(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Deoghuria, Swapan; Roy, SatyabrataThe pivotal role of education as an instrument of social change - by altering the human perspective and transforming the traditional mindset of society is well recognized. The universalisation of education has become the top priority, especially for the developing countries. But the extension of quality education to remote and rural regions becomes a Herculean task for a large country like India with multi-lingual and multi-cultural population separated by vast geographical distances, and, in many instances, inaccessible terrain. Open Courseware (OCW) is part of a comparatively new educational movement in the line of Open Access (OA) and leading institutions and universities around the world are capitalizing it for the betterment of the society. OCW provides learners an opportunity to disseminate knowledge beyond the traditional classroom environment. The present study aims to spread the word of OCW and sensitize the teachers and learners about the tremendous potential of OCW in the context of education in India.Item Open Archives Initiatives Protocols for Metadata Harvesting & Z39.50 in Library Software: A Model(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Singh, R K Joteen; Devi, Th. MadhuriThe objective of library networking is to promote resource sharing and free flow of information. Rapid technological changes have brought a drastic change in the resource sharing activities, specially Open Archives Initiatives (OAI) model enables the dissemination of research output at international, national and regional levels thus removing the restrictions placed by the traditional scientific model. Z39.50 protocol has provided a common platform which help to develop a Union catalogue. These new developments have made resource sharing more practical. In such a scenario, the best approach is to focus on how software will make it possible for the library to utilize networked resources for the maximum benefit of their users. Due to the elasticity of budgets and hike of journals and books prices every year, keeping in view of user needs , libraries are forced to join a consortium.Item RSS Feeds and its Implementation at INFLIBNET(Inflibnet center, 2008-11-06) Kumar, RajeevRSS is a Web 2.0 technology that is being used by millions of web users around the world to keep track of their favourite websites. In the ‘old days’ of the web to keep track of updates on a website visitors had to ‘bookmark’ websites in their browser and manually return to them on a regular basis to see what had been added. RSS has become a valuable technology for everything from casual web users to webmasters. According to a recent Yahoo survey only 12% of internet users are aware of RSS and a mere 4% have knowingly used RSS. The paper discusses about the different aspects of RSS such as meaning of RSS, evolution of RSS, how to create RSS and how to get / read RSS Feeds including basics of XML, which is the basic language for writing programs for RSS Feeds. At the end of this paper, details of the project about the INFLIBNET’s RSS Reader is also discussed.Item Building An Institutional Repository With DSpace(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Thakuria, JuliPaper deals with open source institutional repository software specially DSpace. After defining the terms, it discusses implementation of DSpace as an institutional repositories. DSpace has developed a model that allows users to use the system, submit and use content, and administrators can organize and configure the system. The focus is on user-centered change and participation in the creation of content and community. The concept of Library 2.0 borrows from that of Business 2.0 and Web 2.0 and follows some of the same underlying philosophies. This includes online services such as the use of OPAC systems and an increased flow of information from the user back to the libraryWith Library 2.0, library services are constantly updated and reevaluated to best serve library users. Library 2.0 also attempts to harness the library user in the design and implementation of library services by encouraging feedback and participation. Proponents of this concept expect that ultimately the Library 2.0 model for service will replace traditional, one-directional service offerings that have characterized libraries for centuries.Present paper highlights the chaning role of library 2.0 in present digital environment.Item Union Database of Theses at INFLIBNET Centre: An Overview(Inflibnet center, 2008-11-06) Chavda, Nilam; Chandrakar, RajeshThe INFLIBNET Centre, being a nodal agency of the academic sector of the country working in the area of resource sharing among the community, started developing union databases of library resources available in the university sector. In this regard, PhD dissertation being an important vital source of information for the academic research community, the Centre in the initial period of its establishment, started developing the union database of theses with the support of 82 universities having 52000 records. The database has now 2, 20,206 records with support from 238 universities. This article explains about the creation of theses union database at INFLIBNET Centre. It also includes steps involved in creating the database till the making available online for the user community. They are largely experimental, but some of them are very useful, well-designed and very popular. Google Maps is the most popular component of Mashups. Amazon, Yahoo! Maps, and photo-sharing site Flickr are also a source for many of the sites. The libraries have been well adapting to the emerging technologies to integrate contents and services in order to provide innovative services to the users.
