The paper briefly describes open access journals and the measurement tools of e-journals.Item Application Of Web 2.0 In Library And Information Science: With Special Reference to RSS(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Saha, Nimai Chand; De, Suman; Paul, NirmalenduThe paper contains the substantial implication of the changing web as “web 2.0” for libraries and recognizes that while these implications keep very close to the history and mission of libraries. It describes the theory and definition to the practices of librarianship, specially addressing how RSS feed (popular tool of Web 2.0 technologies) might make changes in libraries provide access to their collection and user support for accessing the same. RSS aggregator applications installed in a library system, and coupled with the social network of the library, will enable users to have a single, customized personal library page that syndicates all the library content of interest to them and their research, elimination of irrelevant information. It also highlights the Download and installation of RSS reader software along with the activation process. This paper focuses to develop humanities and social sciences institutional repositories in India. Results have been shown by collection type and subject coverage.Item Automation in Library using RFID Technology(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Kotecha, Dhaval HLibraries are using cutting edge item level RFID technology in a closed loop system. Today, more and more libraries are adopting RFID as it streamlines workflow in the area of self service, book returns, shelf management and inventory. The potential benefits of using RFID in libraries from the perspective of its main stake holders- the organization; library staff and its patrons shall be highlighted. The paper discusses underline NCIP standards development, practical issues related to RFID working in a library environment and touch upon basic RFID issues concerning equipment maintenance & support; software compatibility; privacy and standardization. Real potential of RFID as a cross-institution platform for identification will be limited by use of proprietary RFID systems and hence recommends system integrators, vendors and libraries to adopt standards & follow best practices guidelines issued by NISO for use of RFID in Libraries.Item Building An Institutional Repository With DSpace(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Thakuria, JuliPaper deals with open source institutional repository software specially DSpace. After defining the terms, it discusses implementation of DSpace as an institutional repositories. DSpace has developed a model that allows users to use the system, submit and use content, and administrators can organize and configure the system. Access to telephony and ICTs world, development has become more widespread in developing countries like Bangladesh. This study aims to identify the information facilities of rural communities in Bangladesh and understand the challenges and opportunities. It also explores how CIC can be strap up to promote development rural communities in Bangladesh. Questionnaire, documentary sources and observations are the major methods of this study. The study identifies that CIC will make easier community peoples life to enter information arena with an easy environment and help them to increase their skills, expertization in their respective fields. Due to the elasticity of budgets and hike of journals and books prices every year, keeping in view of user needs , libraries are forced to join a consortium.Item Development of Health Sciences Digital Library Using Greenstone Digital Library Software at Baba Farid University of Health Sciences(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Manhas, RajeevThe enforcement of change happening in the knowledge creation and information management force to traditional library becomes a digital/ hybrid library (Yadav and Chidambaram, 2008). There are a number of university and institutional libraries, which are in the process of conversion of traditional library system into modern digital library systems. The credit for this movement is gone to Open Source Digital Library Software (OSDLS). Due to the OSDLS, digital library planning and development in practice has been increased in the world. The university library of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) has also started digital library initiative and development of the Health Sciences Digital Library (HSDL) using open source Greenstone Digital Library Software (GSDL). The objective of this article is to give the analogy of road map for the plan and development of HSDL. It also narrates the digital library activities carried out in BFUHS university library.Item Development of Institutional Repositories in Academic and Research Universities in India(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Shind, GanapathiInstitutional repositories emerged as a new strategy that allows universities and research institutions to apply serious, systematic leverage to accelerate changes taking place in scholarship and scholarly communication through the digital content. The increased demand for scholarly information, especially in science and technology demands scholarly societies and universities for centralized access to institutional rich resources revealing the scientific output. Digital publishing, global networking, more research, and increased communication among communities of scholars are driving the demand for broader access. The paper explores the essence of developing Institutional Repositories as a hidden treasure to the academic and research community providing its conceptual development. Further, mentions the issues to be considered before developing institutional repository in the form policy documentation on the part of the institution. Therefore, in the present scenario, IR’s are become an indispensable component for information and knowledge sharing in the scholar world. IR provides a method for capturing and maintaining today’s electronic detritus so that tomorrow’s scholars can understand the thinking behind the published record. Again, for the standard IRs each and every institution should have to equip its library professionals so that they can be able to cope up with the ever-growing changes in this part. In view of the above, this paper tries to explore the contents of IRs and skill requirement for the implantations of the successful Institutional Repository. The paper also discusses the benefits, standard, sustainability & funding, legal considerations to some extents. In addition with this the paper also tries to present the Indian current scenario of the IR. Authors have also discussed about the software’s that are easily available to create and maintain in institutional repositories i.e. Open Source Software and Commercial Digital Repository Software. The libraries have been well adapting to the emerging technologies to integrate contents and services in order to provide innovative services to the users.
