Item RSS Feeds and its Implementation at INFLIBNET(Inflibnet center, 2008-11-06) Kumar, RajeevRSS is a Web 2.0 technology that is being used by millions of web users around the world to keep track of their favourite websites. In the ‘old days’ of the web to keep track of updates on a website visitors had to ‘bookmark’ websites in their browser and manually return to them on a regular basis to see what had been added. RSS has become a valuable technology for everything from casual web users to webmasters. According to a recent Yahoo survey only 12% of internet users are aware of RSS and a mere 4% have knowingly used RSS. The paper discusses about the different aspects of RSS such as meaning of RSS, evolution of RSS, how to create RSS and how to get / read RSS Feeds including basics of XML, which is the basic language for writing programs for RSS Feeds. At the end of this paper, details of the project about the INFLIBNET’s RSS Reader is also discussed.Item Union Database of Theses at INFLIBNET Centre: An Overview(Inflibnet center, 2008-11-06) Chavda, Nilam; Chandrakar, RajeshThe INFLIBNET Centre, being a nodal agency of the academic sector of the country working in the area of resource sharing among the community, started developing union databases of library resources available in the university sector. In this regard, PhD dissertation being an important vital source of information for the academic research community, the Centre in the initial period of its establishment, started developing the union database of theses with the support of 82 universities having 52000 records. The database has now 2, 20,206 records with support from 238 universities. This article explains about the creation of theses union database at INFLIBNET Centre. It also includes steps involved in creating the database till the making available online for the user community. Further, it gives complete overview about the union database of theses.Item Open Library And Librarianship(Inflibnet center, 2008-11-06) Joute, ZomuanaThe paper is concerned about defining an open library, its technology, components, what it will have and provide with respect to the case study of www.openlibrary.org. The paper also concern about application of new technologies in the library, which resulted rapid increases and changes in the traditional functions and services of libraries, and the role and nature of works of library profession and the librarianship. The system of information processing, accessing, retrieving, and dissemination had been dramatically changed librarianship. Library had also been transformed into new open source center and open library, virtual library,. In such libraries, the librarianship had also been dramatically changed; qualities and competencies on the part of library management should also be improved. They are largely experimental, but some of them are very useful, well-designed and very popular. Google Maps is the most popular component of Mashups. Amazon, Yahoo! Maps, and photo-sharing site Flickr are also a source for many of the sites. The libraries have been well adapting to the emerging technologies to integrate contents and services in order to provide innovative services to the users. MadhuriThe internet has become the way of life in this information society. It beings the idea of wall less/boundary less open library. Whereas, in the states like Manipur, the distant and remote corner of North East India, it is only available to few people with access to a Computer Network. The ability and facility to access web contents are very limited. Keeping this in view the present piece of study attempts to analyse the status in 48 (Forty eight) different types of libraries of Manipur. It describes the theory and definition to the practices of librarianship, specially addressing how RSS feed (popular tool of Web 2.0 technologies) might make changes in libraries provide access to their collection and user support for accessing the same. RSS aggregator applications installed in a library system, and coupled with the social network of the library, will enable users to have a single, customized personal library page that syndicates all the library content of interest to them and their research, elimination of irrelevant information. It also highlights the Download and installation of RSS reader software along with the activation process. Approach : A brief description of web services is followed by future of web services and present scenario in India. Findings : Web services offer many advantages to the library community, but the majority of these advantages need standardization of web services and active involvement/participation of library staff. There are a number of university and institutional libraries, which are in the process of conversion of traditional library system into modern digital library systems. The credit for this movement is gone to Open Source Digital Library Software (OSDLS). Due to the OSDLS, digital library planning and development in practice has been increased in the world. The university library of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) has also started digital library initiative and development of the Health Sciences Digital Library (HSDL) using open source Greenstone Digital Library Software (GSDL). The objective of this article is to give the analogy of road map for the plan and development of HSDL. It also narrates the digital library activities carried out in BFUHS university library.Item Development of Institutional Repositories in Academic and Research Universities in India(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Shind, GanapathiInstitutional repositories emerged as a new strategy that allows universities and research institutions to apply serious, systematic leverage to accelerate changes taking place in scholarship and scholarly communication through the digital content. The increased demand for scholarly information, especially in science and technology demands scholarly societies and universities for centralized access to institutional rich resources revealing the scientific output. Digital publishing, global networking, more research, and increased communication among communities of scholars are driving the demand for broader access. The paper explores the essence of developing Institutional Repositories as a hidden treasure to the academic and research community providing its conceptual development. Further, mentions the issues to be considered before developing institutional repository in the form policy documentation on the part of the institution. In this digital age, everyone wants contents and to be successful information service providers. So, Information Center and Libraries needs to develop services in such a way so that the end users may manipulate the content, as per their requirements. Therefore, in the present scenario, IR’s are become an indispensable component for information and knowledge sharing in the scholar world. IR provides a method for capturing and maintaining today’s electronic detritus so that tomorrow’s scholars can understand the thinking behind the published record. Again, for the standard IRs each and every institution should have to equip its library professionals so that they can be able to cope up with the ever-growing changes in this part. In view of the above, this paper tries to explore the contents of IRs and skill requirement for the implantations of the successful Institutional Repository. The paper also discusses the benefits, standard, sustainability & funding, legal considerations to some extents. In addition with this the paper also tries to present the Indian current scenario of the IR. Authors have also discussed about the software’s that are easily available to create and maintain in institutional repositories i.e. Open Source Software and Commercial Digital Repository Software. University, Nanded.Item Open Access, Open Source Archives, and Open Libraries Initiatives for Universal Access to Knowledge and Information :An Overview of Indian Initiatives(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Sinha, Manoj KumarThe present paper describes about the universal access to knowledge and information in the network and digital environment. It highlights the Open Access Declaration, Open Access Movement in India and aboard, Open Source Software for establishing Institutional Repositories and Digital Libraries for open access. Besides this it also highlights the recommendations of the Working Groups of National Knowledge Commission for Libraries and Open Access and Open Access Educational Resources. Some of the national level digital library initiatives and institutional repositories have also been listed for the benefit of the professionals. Initiatives taken by the INFLIBNET Centre , Ahmedabad and IISc , Bangalore and other institutions for creating Digital Libraries using Dspace has also been described. It servers as a digital archive of the total research output created by the academic community of an institute. It makes freely accessible over the internet this intellectual output to all those who are interested in it, thereby promoting the knowledge development. TIFR too is therefore planning to build its Institutional Repository and as a prelude to this has undertaken a pilot project. This paper discusses some of the details of this initiative.
