Item Access Provision and Security to Digital Resources(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Mukut, Sarmah; Chakraborty, SumanaUsage of digital media has witnessed a tremendous growth during the last decades, as a result of their notable benefits in efficient storage, ease of manipulation and transmission. However these features make digital media vulnerable to copyright infringement, tampering and unauthorized distribution. The access provisions and security or protection of digital resources has received significant attention within the digital media community, and a number of techniques in this respect have been evolved. In this paper we have discussed some of the reasons for attacking the digital resources; authentication, authorization, data hiding techniques for copyright protection and also some relevant topics of research results.Item Access to Digital Resources Using Internet At Banaras Hindu University : A Survey(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Prasad, H N; Singh, SuchitaThis paper presents the analysis of the survey of Internet users at Banaras Hindu University. It examines various aspects of Internet use like frequency, purpose, facilities etc. Problems faced by Internet users in accessing digital resources are presented. Due to proliferation of digital resources, it is important that they should be preserved for long-term access. AIR is one of the of mass media organization and the AIR Libraries need immediate attention for their modernization of its services. The present paper discusses the objectives of the AIR and the role of the libraries in fulfilling the objectives .Proposes a stage wise plan for the total automation of the AIR Libraries in this direction for the networking of the AIR Libraries.Item APPLICATION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT) IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES AND INFORMATION CENTRES(LICS) IN CHENNAI: A STUDY OF ITS IMPACT ON LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES(LIS)(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Kasi Rao, V; Ramesh Babu, BThe ongoing Information Technology(IT) revolution has deeply affected almost all areas of our life and all aspects of humans activity. Libraries, Information and Documentation Centres(LIBIDOCS) are no exception to the impact of Information Technology. The application of IT in different types of libraries in India has gained sufficient momentum. The IT application tools are essential for providing efficient and cost effective library and information services to the user community in the present scenario. Review of literature reveals a number of studies conducted in the application of IT in LIBIDOCS in the recent years. This paper presents one such study which has been carried out by surveying the application of IT among academic LICS in and around Chennai. There are nearly 100 academic institutions at graduate, post graduate and research levels in various disciplines. Libraries of 45 institutions like universities and colleges have been covered in the survey to analyse the nature, extent and types of application of IT based services. It also studies the areas of IT application, collection development policy , manpower development and the attitude of staff towards IT application. Finally, it also analyses the reasons for poor use of IT if any, and concludes objectively that application of IT in university libraries would certainly bring about orderly operations in Library and Information Manager Environment (LIME) without much of human interventions.Item APPLICATION OF WORLD WIDE WEB AS A REFERENCE TOOL FOR THE SCHOLARS OF ENVIRONMENTAL ECONOMICS(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Kaul, SurekhaThe paper first discusses the Internet and its origin. Then, the information needs of the Environmental Economics scholars are explained. Thirdly the important web resources both Indian and International covering, Institutions government agencies, journals reference collection etc. dealing with Environmental Economia are presented. Lastly the author suggests that the use of web based information by the scholars working in the area of Environmental Economics to study the current problems. It discusses the mission of digital library, a new library concept in the digital age of information. It emphasizes on two main aspects - multimedia technology and networking specially Internet, which can be treated as two wings of any digital library system. It also highlights that library and information professionals must acquire the knowledge on these two emerging areas and develop their skills for rendering effective and efficient users services. They have brought a number of advantages to publishers, libraries and scholarly community. Along with these advantages they address number of issues and challenges. One of the major issues is in respect of archiving of the back issues of a journal. This paper discusses the role of these players.Item CD – ROM DATABASE SERVICES IN NETWORK USING ‘SLINGSHOT’: AN EXPERIENCE AT CENTRAL LIBRARY, I.I.T. KHARAGPUR.(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Mohapatra, P K; Shankar, UmaThis article deals with concept and scope of Local Area Network (LAN) , Intranet and their applications in the area of Online Database Services in any modern automated library system, with specific reference to the current status of online database services, presently in operation, at Central Library , I.I.T. Kharagpur. In the introduction, authors present a short description of the ongoing trends in information management field with special attention to the need of the day for network based online library services to overcome the age old barriers of geographical distance and time . Further to this, authors present an outline of the existing strong and secure computer network infrastructure available at IIT kharagpur, which has created a favourable condition for switching over to large scale online library services from the conventional stand alone mode of services. The policies and procedures for accessing Internet are discussed in detail.Item COMPARATIVE STUDY OF INTERNET EDITIONS OF MARATHI NEWSPAPERS.(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Patil, S K; Mahajan, S GInternet editions of various newspapers in English and other regional languages in India are being produced, on an increasing scale, in India during the last three/four years. The text of these editions is preserved at various newspaper offices. This has resulted in database creation activity in Indian languages. Internet editions of Marathi newspapers are also being produced recently . Studies have been conducted on four Marathi news papers and various aspects like periodicity, preservation periods, typography/fonts used, procedure for information searching, headings, colours used etc. have been studied.Item CREATION AND MANAGEMENT OF DIGITAL RESOURCES - A SURVEY OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION CENTRES OFTWELVE INSTITUTIONS IN PUNE(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Tarunde, Rewa AA survey of library and information centres of 12 institutions which include 3 Engineering colleges, 4 Research Centres and 5 Software companies was conducted. While investigating creation and management of digital resources as well as conventional resources, it was observed that engineering colleges have interactive classroom type of learning and therefore the libraries have mainly textbooks/reference books, where as in software companies, information was available in the web based form. It was also observed that software companies were establishing Documentation/Resources centres. In order to interact more effectively to convert information into solutions and useful products via knowledge, it is suggested that libraries/information centres should play an active role in this process. By providing database approach to the web site design, these problems can be solved to some extent. Since the information available on the WWW is massive, the design is done for software in Biotechnology and Bioengineering. The need for software database and features of existing Bio related software databases are explained. The data about Bio software on the WWW is collected and arranged in a generalized standard format. Metaphorically, the library has triumphantly crossed the physical barriers of time and space. The library automation has reached, but, the first milestone of providing multiple bibliographical-access to the printed documents mostly, but has not penetrated further into the full-texts. The library needs to look beyond automation. Admittedly, the library has to effectively carry on its mission with new stock -in-trade of e-books/e-journals. It has to redefine its services by way of responding constructively and imaginatively to the challenges. Days are not very far off when the library will be brought to the desktop of each user for collaborative virtual reference service.
