One major difference lies in the fact that libraries are also increasingly getting involved in the very creation of digital resources.Digital resources can broadly be grouped into two categories – those that are originally created and distributed in digital format and those that are originally created in another format and are later converted into a digital format through a process generally referred to as digitization. Several organizations – libraries, governments, research institutions, and commercial organizations - at local, regional, national and international levels are involved on digitization activities. This paper begins with an understanding of digitization - the meaning and the processes – and then seeks to look at the issues involved in the digitization process from the perspective of libraries. As such, the focus is greater on the digitization of printed materials, rather than objects or sound, film or video recordings.Item APPROACHES OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES IN DIGITAL LIBRARIES(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Panigrahi, P KThis paper emphasizes on the modern trend of library and informationservices considering that the digitised information is easily accessible than print media. They have brought a number of advantages to publishers, libraries and scholarly community. Along with these advantages they address number of issues and challenges. One of the major issues is in respect of archiving of the back issues of a journal. This has been addressed by various players like publishers, consortia, individual libraries and third party aggregators. This paper discusses the role of these players.Item DIGITAL LIBRARY DEVELOPMENT: MAJOR ISSUES OF EXTERNALLY PUBLISHED CONTENTS(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Vijayakumar, J K; Jeevan, V K JA library may procure contents in various sources and forms to service their clients. In the predominantly paper based erstwhile environment all these contents were put to similar types of use, and copyright restrictions were imposed based on the quantum of pages copied etc. In the electronic and digital perspective, owners of information are resorting to punitive measures regarding the use and contents in digital form. Some of the constraints faced by our libraries to engage in serious digital initiatives are three fold-that of money, manpower and contents. Most of our libraries, particularly in the higher education and research institutes solely depend on the information providers and publishers in the developed world to satisfy their urge for vital contents that inspire indigenous research. Since contents are a major ingredient in digital library development, the pragmatic and viable way out for libraries is to judiciously judge them as available in electronic forms in optical media or on Web and procure at least some of them for hosting locally. This paper presents some of the major issues involved in such a critical activity with some illustrative examples available like IEE/IEEE Electronic Library, Indian Standards on CD-ROM, Science Direct and Web access of Indian Academy of Sciences journals. The justification for selecting external contents has also been mentioned. A detailed checklist for evaluating contents is presented from various angles, like authenticity of content, user interface, search and display capabilities, documentation and technical support, and Media dependent features.Item DIGITISATION OF RESOURCES AT MADRAS UNIVERSITY LIBRARY (MUL) USING THE "SOUL"(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Vengan, R.; Ganesan, SThe paper gives a brief account of IT application in Madras University Library. This has been reflected by many renewed critics in their professional literature on practical and technical matters. In this paper the authors try to emphasise major changes that are likely to take place and a need for recognition regarding convergence between library, computing , and telecommunications services; of probable changes in the publishing world, and library management using new tools and techniques.Item INFRASTRUCTURE REQUIREMENT FOR DIGITISATION OF MANUSCRIPTS AT BAMUL(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Vaishnav, A A; Sonwane, S SDigitisation of manuscripts aims to stimulate a responsible approach to the sources from which our historical consciousness grows and to contribute to the general availability of information about our history and culture. Users do not have to be concerned with the physical library’s hours of operation, and users do not have to physically go to the library to access resources. Much has been written about the digital library. The focus of most studies, papers, and articles has been on the technology, or on the types of resources offered. Human interaction in the digital library is discussed far less frequently. One would almost get the impression that the service tradition of the physical library will be unnecessary and redundant in the digital library environment. This paper explores the role of the librarian and of the service perspective, in the digital library environment. Focus of the paper is limited to librarian/user collaboration where the librarian and user are not co-located. The author, explores the role of the librarian as outlined in the literature on digital libraries, examines some studies that attempt to put the service perspective in the digital library, surveys existing initiatives in providing library services electronically, and outlines potential service perspectives for the digital library.Item DESKTOP LIBRARY VIS-À-VIS VIRTUAL REFERENCE DESK EMPOWER THE END USER TO MAP THE INFINITE ETEXTS(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Venugopal, SThere has been steady erosion of sole custodial authority of the library on the heritage of human kind ever since the Information Technology brought about a media revolution in the content and access of human knowledge. Metaphorically, the library has triumphantly crossed the physical barriers of time and space. The library automation has reached, but, the first milestone of providing multiple bibliographical-access to the printed documents mostly, but has not penetrated further into the full-texts. The library needs to look beyond automation. Admittedly, the library has to effectively carry on its mission with new stock -in-trade of e-books/e-journals. It has to redefine its services by way of responding constructively and imaginatively to the challenges. Days are not very far off when the library will be brought to the desktop of each user for collaborative virtual reference service. The organization of the Internet resources in inter- and intra disciplinary areas for the prospective community of scholars rests with the library professionals.Item METADATA: A TOOL FOR CATALOGUING WEB RESOURCES(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Singh, Pramod KumarAs the Internet became an accepted source of electronic information, a variety of information communities have developed metadata to organize these resources to effectively serve their users. So metadata has taken on a more significant role of knowledge representation and data mining. In today's context, where the web contains the collection of massive heterogeneous objects, which need to be unified and linked in a single resource, we are witnessing both the growth of different metadata standards and the attempts to reconcile the common attributes in the existing overlapping standards. The goal is to access relevant information seamlessly, regardless of its type and location. This article addresses different aspects of metadata, the rationale behind it and gives a general picture of Dublin Core metadata elements.Item CREATION AND MANAGEMENT OF DIGITAL RESOURCES - A SURVEY OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION CENTRES OFTWELVE INSTITUTIONS IN PUNE(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Tarunde, Rewa AA survey of library and information centres of 12 institutions which include 3 Engineering colleges, 4 Research Centres and 5 Software companies was conducted. While investigating creation and management of digital resources as well as conventional resources, it was observed that engineering colleges have interactive classroom type of learning and therefore the libraries have mainly textbooks/reference books, where as in software companies, information was available in the web based form. It was also observed that software companies were establishing Documentation/Resources centres. In order to interact more effectively to convert information into solutions and useful products via knowledge, it is suggested that libraries/information centres should play an active role in this process. Research institutions and engineering colleges can also follow the learning and skill development process followed by IT companies.
