Item Access of Electronic Resources in Engineering College Libraries of Assam: An Empirical Analysis(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Majumdar, Apurbajyoti; Majumdar, Sharmila BoseThe main objective of this research is to analyze and evaluate the use of web based-resources by the engineering college libraries of Assam. It covers the different types of academic users including faculty members, students and research scholars. It aims to consider the various factors of e-resources usage such as purposes, impact, importance, problems, acceptance, and satisfaction with e-resources. The survey was conducted with the help of a structured questionnaire followed by interview as and where it was felt necessary. Two formats of questionnaire were prepared; first, a printed format and second, an electronic format using Google Docs spreadsheet. The data so collected were analyzed and interpreted with the help of MS Excel. The study finds many aspects of e-resources use among engineering academics of Assam. It reveals that engineering college library users are using many types of e-resources. Using the e-resources, their academic/professional competency also improved. The teaching methodology also involved the e-resources uses and the students’ ability was also affected in a positive manner by this methodology. Some problems were also explored in using eresources. The majority of users were quite satisfied with using e-resources. The study was an attempt to evaluate the use of e-resources by users of engineering college libraries of Assam. Results from the study are encouraging and it is hoped that the findings will provide meaning and a useful platform for further research as well as usability among engineering academics will also be improved.Item Application of Google Drive in Academic Library: A Practical Approach(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2014-09-25) Mazumdar, Nirmal RanjanApplication of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Library and Information Centre (LIC) brings significant changes in its systems and services. The LIC always tries to apply various ICT tools to make the systems and services more user-friendly. Cloud computing is the recent one in this row. This paper shows how the Google’s cloud based service, i.e., Google Drive can be used in a college library. In college library, for purchasing the library books, the faculty members usually submit their requisite list of books in plain paper or in a prescribed form containing different columns for bibliographic information and number of copies required. In this process, a librarian faces different obstacles. Google Drive is one of the to solutions to overcome from this issue. This study is completely based on a practical approach followed in Pub Kamrup College Library and it is in initial stage/trial stage.Item Awareness and Use of UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium E-Resources in Universities of Gujarat State: A Sample Survey(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Joshi, Namrata MThis survey finds that 57.20 percent of the users are aware and use the UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium E- resources, whereas 31.16 percent are aware, but do not use and 11.62 percent are not at all aware of the availability of the consortium resources. The majority of non-users belong to social sciences and humanities and those who have not undergone any type formal computer training. Comparatively the users from science stream uses the consortium resources more frequently than those belonging to social science and humanities. Lack of knowledge to use, slow internet bandwidth, lack of time to visit university library and can not access this consortium on ID/Passwords are found to be the major problem faced. Providing training and giving access to ID/Password to its users will make maximum use of the consortium.Item Blended Learning Solution for the LIS Education: AU Perspective(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Sen, Deepshikha; Sarmah, MukutPurpose – The purpose of this paper is to find out the Assam University library and information science (LIS) students’ perspective and desire concerning the use of Blended Learning (BL) in LIS education. Based on the results of this study, this paper will seek to identify their awareness and aspiration towards blended learning. Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire was distributed to students of the LIS of Assam University, Silchar. First, they were asked to state their awareness on BL, and then to express their views for the use of BL in LIS education. Findings – This research revealed that knowledge of Blended Learning is less among respondents. But those who know, they appreciate Blended Learning as compared to traditional one in LIS education. The aspiration of students towards blended learning was examined in their urge to study in LIS course which deals with blended learning format of teaching and learning process. Again it also came to light that students might be more motivated to acquire LIS knowledge through Blended learning. Originality/value – The implementation of BL method of teaching, especially in LIS departments, is very important nowadays as because the future librarians are to work in a blended environment. There are only a few studies about BL in India. This study will help LIS faculty to understand students’perception regarding BL in order to shape the learning paradigm and adopt BL for their classes. Capacity building involves man-machine interfaces to enhance operating efficiency, skills of employee of an organization towards the achievement of organizational goals. In order to make employees satisfied and committed to their jobs in academic and research libraries, there is need for strong and effective motivation at the various levels, departments and sections of the library. The present study was undertaken with a view to know the role of training program of LIS Professionals in their library services. The present study is based on the opinion of LIS professional from Rabindra Library, Assam University, Silchar and various college libraries which are affiliated under Assam University, Silchar in Cachar District, Assam. For this purpose, survey method has been adopted by the investigators, which comprises of administration of questionnaire, observation of the participants, and interview of the LIS professionals for knowing their view towards training program. The self-designed questionnaire has been distributed amongst the randomly selected samples. The filled up questionnaires have been collected from the respondents for data analysis and interpretations. For data analysis percentage calculations have been made. Findings of this study shows that training is essential for LIS professionals for developing their skill by attending conferences, workshop, refresher course, etc. to cope up with the capacity to handle latest technology.Item Capacity-Building Through Digitization, Electronic Records Management And Other Means for Archives:Indian Scenari(INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, 2014-09-25) Kumar, Mritunjay; Bansal, JiveshThis paper is an attempt to understand as to how digitization and electronic records management and related efforts have made effective changes in the working of Indian Archives and similar/ ancillary institutions dealing in traditional knowledge management and related task. Similar attempt are being made to understand the digitization and related efforts being made at Archival Cell, A.C. Joshi Library, Panjab University, Chandigarh as a case study of regional repository/university and how far it supports the national initiatives in this regard. The authors try to address the gap, benefits and opportunities identified in integrating cloud storage in Iaas (Infrastructure as a Service) level and the other two layers of cloud computing like PaaS (Platform as a Service)and SaaS (Software as a Service).Item Collaboration Pattern in the Field of Natural Sciences at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi During 1971-2007(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Kumar, Shailendra; Naqvi, Shehbaz HusainThe present study is bibliometrics analysis of collaboration trends of the publications by Faculty of Natural Sciences at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi in India during 1971-2007 in its six departments. The Faculty of Natural Science in Jamia Millia Islamia consists of six departments viz. Biosciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography, Mathematics and Physics. It is clear from the study that authorship pattern is more towards multiple authorships, degree of collaboration is high and multi-authorship is prominent in the field of Natural Sciences in Jamia Millia Islamia. The total number of papers published in 37 years is 1257. The publications in the form of Journal articles and Conference papers only were taken into consideration for analysis. It is found that number of papers published in the year 1971 which is 1, i.e., 0.08% of the total papers rose to 136 in the year 2005 which is 136, i.e., 10.82% of the total papers. There are 231(18.38%) papers which were written by single authors and rest 1026 (81.62%) papers are contributed by two or more authors. Collaborative Index, Degree of Collaboration, Collaborative Coefficient, Modified Collaborative Coefficient were calculated from the data and the following mean values were found 2.38, 0.73, respectively. In total period of study of 37 years from 1971 to 2007 the average number of authors per paper is more than 2.98. It can be seen from the Collaborative pattern that collaboration is more prominent in Physics, Chemistry and less in Mathematics, Geography. This study strengthened the fact that collaborative research in different fields of sciences has proved fruitful and that scientists like to work in team and their scientific research get sprouts in the fertile field of group environment.Item Collaboration Tools and Its Relevance in Library Services(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Goswami, Pallab Kr; Choudhury, NisangkaThe development of technologies, particularly internet technologies has changed the way of the individuals to obtain information. The methodology used for collecting data for the study is a combination of questionnaire and interview method. It constitutes the physical space, physical media, digital resources, digital services and training etc. Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Library System has done significant work to develop a healthy information commons to provide digital environment to assist the university students, researchers and faculties into their studies and research works. This paper presents the development of the information commons in the Central Library at Banaras Hindu University. It discusses the need and goals of the facilities to support the seamless access, collaboration and production of the scholarly outputs. Advances in computer storage and telecommunication methods, online access to databases, electronic journals, electronic document delivery, Radio Frequency Identification systems, Compact discs, Internet etc are revolutionary developments in the last two to three decades that have brought a great change in the collection, communication, storage and management of information. The present scenario reflects the emerging trends among libraries to get themselves into digital form with a vision to build up a sound digital resource collection by transforming from traditional to digital. The role of Information and Communication Technology in library and information sector is enormous and its impact has compelled the traditional libraries to revisit their modus operandi in order to deliver speedy access of information to their client. Skill that need for establishing digital library becomes basic necessity for capacity building in respect of not only collection development but also services to be rendered. The main purpose of digitization is to improve the efficiency of Library and to render optimum user service, which enables a user from single workstation to perform wider variety of activities. Digital preservation is the most effective methods through which we can permanently preserve any information specially those are of national importance. Before taking the final decision on digitization, it is batter to determine the main purpose of the digitization whether digitization is primary for preservation or for frequent use. Digital Library has its own merits and demerits. Digital Libraries are engaged to collect, store and disseminate digital information. . In digitization process focus should be given feasibility as we cannot digitize all the printed materials even we do it may not be cost effective. Most important is that what to digitize and so the priority.Item E-resources Consortia: An Urgent Need for College Libraries in Cachar District: A Case Study(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Chakravorty, JayantiCollege education in India, as of now, is facing pressures of increased enrollment, changing educational policies and the challenging task of imparting higher education to a vast human resource potential in the age group of 14 to 24, enabling them to participate in 21st Century global knowledge race. Simultaneous to this situation, unprecedented change in information scenario, current trends in electronic publishing, advanced technologies facilitating faster information access, concept of globalization of knowledge have altogether made the information environment more complex. Higher education aims to achieve a comprehensive and well-rounded development in the life of the students. This is not possible through formal, limited-time class lectures alone; exposure to a vast collection of books and educational resources is needed for that. So, a well-equipped library is an essential component of the higher education structure. To what extent our college libraries are prepared to cope up with the changed information environment or remaining relevant towards augmenting higher educational process is an issue of serious thought. This paper presents a survey report on the college libraries of Cachar District in Assam. The study shows that most of the libraries, under survey, suffer from inadequacy of library holdings, budgetary crunch, non availability of ICT Tools and poor infrastructure. To overcome this situation and to make the library services relevant to the institutional goals, it is necessary that the college libraries become well-equipped and more responsive to users’ need, and in doing so, formation of E-Resource Consortia is probably the most viable solution.Item HR in Capacity Building of ODI Institute’s Library(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Kakati, ManishaOpen and Distance Learning (ODL) system of education is becoming popular and receiving importance day by day as the scope and network spreads. The libraries belong to these institutions have been playing a vital role in fulfillment of its objective. Libraries are considered indispensable in every part of higher education.With the expansion of ICT, it has faced challenges. Only a well-trained professional staff can manage and utilize it to the benefit of user community. It is the manpower along with ICT which can build the libraries of ODL system, be it within the walls or without wall, and make the ODL system a meaningful one and successful throughout the nation. This paper discusses about the libraries belong to open and distance learning institutions (ODL) along with the services they provide, usage of ICT, staff strength etc. for good handling and better utilization of ICT and make the library efficient and user oriented. Effective library support to distance learners is mandatory for qualitative delivery of instruction and learning.Item Information Retrieval Techniques used by the Midnapore College (Autonomous) Library Users: A Study(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Dutta, Avijit; Das, Subarna KumarThis paper aims to present the results of a survey conducted to determine the information retrieval techniques used by the teachers and students of Midnapore College library. The paper examines the result from a questionnaire-based survey conducted at the library. 100 samples of the questionnaire were distributed randomly between the staff and students of the college out of which 93 completed and received for analysis. The study reveals that a significant number of users search information regarding the library material through OPAC despite encountering problems. Lack of basic skills among users was found to be the major reason for not utilizing full features of OPAC, improper query formulation and non use of search operators while surf the web. It is suggested that library should organize quality instruction programmes to improve knowledge and skills of the users.Item Information Seeking Behavior of Scientists of ICAR, Meghalaya: A Study(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Choudhury, Monita; Sarmah, MukutUnderstanding about the information needs and seeking behaviour of agricultural scientists could play a vital role in gathering their information needs efficiently. Libraries can use this knowledge for reorienting their collections and facilities to adapt them to the needs of the scientific community. The main purpose of the study is to examine different facets of information seeking behaviour, and specifically the information needs and seeking behaviour of agricultural scientists of ICAR Institutes of Meghalaya, , use pattern and also different types of constrains faced by them.A survey method along with random sampling technique was used for the study. A well designed questionnaire was used as a data collection tool along with observations and informal interviews. Some of 68 questionnaires were distributed, out of which 65 questionnaires received with response rate of (95.6%). Findings indicate that guidance in the use of library resources and services and mainly updating the Institutes libraries is necessary to help agricultural scieninformation needs and seeking behaviour of agricultural scientists of ICAR institutes in Meghalaya.Item Information Seeking Behaviour of Students in Digital Era: A Study on the Postgraduate Students of Life Science of Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Sarma, Rahul; Sarma, Roon DeviInformation seeking behavior refers to the way people search and utilize information. This study was undertaken to determine the information-seeking behavior and use of information resources by students of Life Science Dept. of Rajiv Gandhi University. In the course of seeking, the individual may interact with manual information systems or with computer-based systems. The study made an effort to determine the sources used for accessing e-resources in particular. Libraries are regarded as beating heart of a university setup. It can play important role in student’s information-seeking behavior, which is considered as a multifarious, dynamic, social human behavior that needs a picture as rich as possible to truly understand the phenomenon.
