The analytical period is from the year 2001 to 2014, June. This paper finds out year-wise submission of PhD theses in different departments and rank-wise distribution of each discipline according to its submitted percentage. A new parameter on the basis of published conference papers in CALIBER and NACLIN has been devised for making the assessment of the services and activities organized by INFLIBNET and DELNET. Assessment has also been made on the effectiveness of these organizations contributing in making available the reading resources to their member libraries. Career and employment information is very much important for student community as it guides them towards career awareness. Now a days, every student talks about career and employment opportunities in their early college days. Career counseling plays a vital role among the students of rural degree colleges where they have no opportunity to go for professional career counselor. In this regard, Career Counseling Cell of the colleges should play a vital role. But in practice it is observed that the cell provides services on paper only. In most of the colleges, the cell exists only in the time of NAAC accreditation. Resource generation and mobilization is very much essential, and the need of hour for college libraries.The present paper is not only essential for present college library scenarios, but also to suggest and explore additional financial resources for library developmentItem Research Publication Trends of the Scientists of Tezpur University: A Scientometric Study(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Goswami, Rubi; Hazarika, TilakBibliographic records of 847 items retrieved from Web of Science were studied and increasing publication trends were seen in Tezpur University (T.U.). The average output of the organization was 60 publications per year; the peak was 200 items in 2012 and the minimum was 4 items in the year 1999. Single authorship publication accounted for 6%, while multi authorship publication of articles accounted for 94 %. The top 22 institutions which collaborated with T.U accounted for about 26% share. It was seen that the publications of T.U received a total of 4763 citations during the period of 14 years. It covers the different types of academic users including faculty members, students and research scholars. It aims to consider the various factors of e-resources usage such as purposes, impact, importance, problems, acceptance, and satisfaction with e-resources. The survey was conducted with the help of a structured questionnaire followed by interview as and where it was felt necessary. Two formats of questionnaire were prepared; first, a printed format and second, an electronic format using Google Docs spreadsheet. The data so collected were analyzed and interpreted with the help of MS Excel. The study finds many aspects of e-resources use among engineering academics of Assam. It reveals that engineering college library users are using many types of e-resources. Using the e-resources, their academic/professional competency also improved. The teaching methodology also involved the e-resources uses and the students’ ability was also affected in a positive manner by this methodology. Some problems were also explored in using eresources. The majority of users were quite satisfied with using e-resources. The study was an attempt to evaluate the use of e-resources by users of engineering college libraries of Assam. Results from the study are encouraging and it is hoped that the findings will provide meaning and a useful platform for further research as well as usability among engineering academics will also be improved.Item Measuring the Publication Productivity of N.E-Indian Universities Using Scopus: A Bibliometric Analysis(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Pal, Birender; Ahmed, MerinaUniversities of N.E- India are having a great importance in higher education sector for the region. Scholars from these universities published a numbers of intellectual works in different publication sources. SCOPUS is an indexing and abstracting database which facilitates for accessing the high quality published materials. The database is having a unique method of searching known as “affiliation search” strategy and the data for the institution publications are collected from it . The paper aims at investigating the different types of published materials by the Universities of N.E- India like articles, conference papers, review, erratum etc. The paper also identifies the peak period in which the growth of publication is maximum. It constitutes the physical space, physical media, digital resources, digital services and training etc. Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Library System has done significant work to develop a healthy information commons to provide digital environment to assist the university students, researchers and faculties into their studies and research works. This paper presents the development of the information commons in the Central Library at Banaras Hindu University. It discusses the need and goals of the facilities to support the seamless access, collaboration and production of the scholarly outputs. Only a well-trained professional staff can manage and utilize it to the benefit of user community. It is the manpower along with ICT which can build the libraries of ODL system, be it within the walls or without wall, and make the ODL system a meaningful one and successful throughout the nation. This paper discusses about the libraries belong to open and distance learning institutions (ODL) along with the services they provide, usage of ICT, staff strength etc. for good handling and better utilization of ICT and make the library efficient and user oriented. Effective library support to distance learners is mandatory for qualitative delivery of instruction and learning.Item Blended Learning Solution for the LIS Education: AU Perspective(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Sen, Deepshikha; Sarmah, MukutPurpose – The purpose of this paper is to find out the Assam University library and information science (LIS) students’ perspective and desire concerning the use of Blended Learning (BL) in LIS education. Based on the results of this study, this paper will seek to identify their awareness and aspiration towards blended learning. Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire was distributed to students of the LIS of Assam University, Silchar. First, they were asked to state their awareness on BL, and then to express their views for the use of BL in LIS education. Findings – This research revealed that knowledge of Blended Learning is less among respondents. But those who know, they appreciate Blended Learning as compared to traditional one in LIS education. The aspiration of students towards blended learning was examined in their urge to study in LIS course which deals with blended learning format of teaching and learning process. Again it also came to light that students might be more motivated to acquire LIS knowledge through Blended learning. Originality/value – The implementation of BL method of teaching, especially in LIS departments, is very important nowadays as because the future librarians are to work in a blended environment. There are only a few studies about BL in India. This study will help LIS faculty to understand students’perception regarding BL in order to shape the learning paradigm and adopt BL for their classes. Paper type: Research paper under Institutional Capacity BuildingItem Knowledge Management through Academic Portal: A Case study of IIT Madras(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Chakraborty, NirmaliThe study aims to investigate students’ perceptions of using academic portal as knowledge management tool at IIT Madras. A self administered questionnaire was distributed among randomly selected 100 students of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. Moreover, a scheduled interview was conducted with the senior library professionals of the concerned institute. This research paper introduces the relationship between academic portal and knowledge management practices. The study shows that all the respondents are very much interested to use the academic portals of their institute and quite a good number of respondents are participating in those portals. Of course, the awareness level of the respondents regarding the utilization of academic portals as knowledge management tool is low. Therefore, the institution should create awareness among the users by conducting programmes, such as orientation programs, demonstrations, workshops, conferences, seminars and through notices regarding the complete potential of the academic portals and their use as knowledge management tool. This study was undertaken to determine the information-seeking behavior and use of information resources by students of Life Science Dept. of Rajiv Gandhi University. In the course of seeking, the individual may interact with manual information systems or with computer-based systems. The study made an effort to determine the sources used for accessing e-resources in particular. Libraries are regarded as beating heart of a university setup. It can play important role in student’s information-seeking behavior, which is considered as a multifarious, dynamic, social human behavior that needs a picture as rich as possible to truly understand the phenomenon.Item Information Seeking Behavior of Scientists of ICAR, Meghalaya: A Study(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Choudhury, Monita; Sarmah, MukutUnderstanding about the information needs and seeking behaviour of agricultural scientists could play a vital role in gathering their information needs efficiently. Libraries can use this knowledge for reorienting their collections and facilities to adapt them to the needs of the scientific community. The main purpose of the study is to examine different facets of information seeking behaviour, and specifically the information needs and seeking behaviour of agricultural scientists of ICAR Institutes of Meghalaya, , use pattern and also different types of constrains faced by them.A survey method along with random sampling technique was used for the study. A well designed questionnaire was used as a data collection tool along with observations and informal interviews. Some of 68 questionnaires were distributed, out of which 65 questionnaires received with response rate of (95.6%). Findings indicate that guidance in the use of library resources and services and mainly updating the Institutes libraries is necessary to help agricultural scieninformation needs and seeking behaviour of agricultural scientists of ICAR institutes in Meghalaya.Item Information Retrieval Techniques used by the Midnapore College (Autonomous) Library Users: A Study(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Dutta, Avijit; Das, Subarna KumarThis paper aims to present the results of a survey conducted to determine the information retrieval techniques used by the teachers and students of Midnapore College library. The paper examines the result from a questionnaire-based survey conducted at the library. 100 samples of the questionnaire were distributed randomly between the staff and students of the college out of which 93 completed and received for analysis. The study reveals that a significant number of users search information regarding the library material through OPAC despite encountering problems. Lack of basic skills among users was found to be the major reason for not utilizing full features of OPAC, improper query formulation and non use of search operators while surf the web. It is suggested that library should organize quality instruction programmes to improve knowledge and skills of the users.Item E-resources Consortia: An Urgent Need for College Libraries in Cachar District: A Case Study(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Chakravorty, JayantiCollege education in India, as of now, is facing pressures of increased enrollment, changing educational policies and the challenging task of imparting higher education to a vast human resource potential in the age group of 14 to 24, enabling them to participate in 21st Century global knowledge race. Simultaneous to this situation, unprecedented change in information scenario, current trends in electronic publishing, advanced technologies facilitating faster information access, concept of globalization of knowledge have altogether made the information environment more complex. Higher education aims to achieve a comprehensive and well-rounded development in the life of the students. This is not possible through formal, limited-time class lectures alone; exposure to a vast collection of books and educational resources is needed for that. So, a well-equipped library is an essential component of the higher education structure. To what extent our college libraries are prepared to cope up with the changed information environment or remaining relevant towards augmenting higher educational process is an issue of serious thought. This paper presents a survey report on the college libraries of Cachar District in Assam. The study shows that most of the libraries, under survey, suffer from inadequacy of library holdings, budgetary crunch, non availability of ICT Tools and poor infrastructure. To overcome this situation and to make the library services relevant to the institutional goals, it is necessary that the college libraries become well-equipped and more responsive to users’ need, and in doing so, formation of E-Resource Consortia is probably the most viable solution.Item Development of Library and Information Product and Service in Academic Institutions: A Study on Selected Colleges in Assam with Special Reference to Jorhat District(INFLIBNET Centre, 2014-09-25) Singh, Ratan; Borman, RatanCollege library and Information Centre have a significant role to play in promoting the higher education. The emerging of new programming languages for the web has promised new transformation for more dynamic web applications. A collaboration tools will give its users the free choice to collaborate with each other in various form in a virtual community. Easily accessible and user-friendly collaboration tools will allow exploring, sharing, engaging, and connecting with people and content in meaningful ways that help them to learn and share knowledge. The purpose of this is to study the concept and impact of collaboration tools use and perception among the academic librarians especially to the university libraries of North Eastern region based on their personality characteristics, computer skill, Internet facilities and usage purposes.
