A-Lib 2.0: New Avatar Academic Libraries with Web 2.0 Applications

The web has seen the explosion of social networking tools, which are empowering ordinary people to connect, collaborate and contribute in a global collaboration. These social software applications are now the hottest properties of the Internet users. This article explains the how Web 2.0 tools could be applied in academic libraries to convert them as A-Lib 2.0 or Academic Library 2.0. The paper further includes a few cases from different libraries which have already adopted these new services. One recent survey found that 34.41% of total academic libraries in New York State are using Web 2.0 Services; the major ones include IM, Blogs, RSS, Book marking, Wiki, Social Networks, etc. Library 2.0 has changed the traditional way of thinking about the profession where library only engage in creating the content and services for user shifted to the side of user where librarian will enable user to create them for themselves
Application of ICT in Two Major Academic Institution Libraries in Arunachal Pradesh: A Survey

This Paper is based on a survey of application of Information and Communication Technology in two major Academic Institution Libraries of Arunachal Pradesh i.e., Rajiv Gandhi Central University Library and NERIST (North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology) Library. Here the discussion is done on the status of library automation, different software packages used for automation, OPAC, use of e-resources and the extent of their use in library operations of these two libraries. This paper also throws light on the problems and difficulties being faced by the library authority in applying ICT in the libraries.
Application of Information and Communication Technology in Judicial Library System

Awareness and use of Online Journals by the Faculty Members, Researchers and Students in the Faculty of Natural Sciences,Jamia Millia Islamia University: A Survey

This study reports the result of a survey conducted at Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMIU) to determine the extent to which user are aware and make use of online journals. The study also examines the search pattern of online journals. A questionnaire was distributed among the Faculty members, Research scholars and Post-Graduate Students to collect desired data. A total of 120 questionnaires were distributed to the selected sample of Faculty of Natural Sciences; 70 valid samples were collected. The study found that the majority of users are aware about the availability of online journals. 60% of respondents want to use online version of journals whereas a few want to use printed journals. Majority of respondents use online journals for their research work. 70% of respondents take printout before using online journals. It was found that users faced problem when using online journals. They are also interested to take training to use online journals.
Best Practices in a Modern Library and Information Center - The Case of Central Library, IIT Bombay

The papers defines the concept and describes the strategy for application of best practices in an organization. It discusses importance of introducing best practices in a modern library and information centre (LIC) to enable it to improve its processes and activities, optimize resource utilization, and deliver high quality, value added services to its users. It reviews the attempts made by IFLA, ALA, ACRL, Australian Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs, and NAAC in India to develop best practices / guidelines for different types of libraries and /or for specific services. The paper has suggested / listed the characteristics of the best LIC. It presents the case study of the Central Library of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay to illustrate that adoption of well defined, transparent, user-focused, and technology-oriented processes and practices with a flexibility to change and improve can lead the LIC to be the best. The practices followed by the Central Library, IIT Bombay have been discussed under : (a) Resource development and management, (b) User services, (c) ICT-enabled services, (d) Users empowerment, Information literacy and library marketing, (e) Other activities. It concludes that the best practices is not a one time solution, but a continuous process. The sense of curiosity, willingness to change and learn from experience of others, and pursuit for superior performance can lead the librarians and libraries to Best Practices.
Biometric Applications in Library and Information Centres: Prospects and Problems

Biometric identification refers to a technology that uses scanned graphical information from many sources for personal identification purposes. The biometric technology helps the libraries to ensure safety and security to its invaluable collections, infrastructure and human resources. It is the duty of the librarian to keep the library buildings, shelves and stacks open and free without losing items to make available or putting individuals at unacceptable risk from the malicious, avaricious or senseless acts of others. Further, the LIS professionals are now handling huge database, provide access to online journals and web-enabled online public access catalogues in the networked digital environment where there are a lot of scope for compute /cyber crimes. In this regard, the biometric technology is a boon for the LIS professionals as it provides a single point of control for administrators to manage access to library resources such as computers, buildings, doors, the Internet, and software applications. In this context, this paper attempts to study the various types of biometric applications available for LIS centres, its prospects and problems as well.
Blogging and Uses of Blogs in Libraries

Copyright Fails in Libraries in Digital Era

The article addresses activities that involve some of the exclusive rights of copyright holders; the right to make copies, to display or perform copyright works, and in some cases to distribute works; and the copyright law’s exemptions from liability for fair use and for certain library copying. Copyright is legally complicated, controversial, subject to a number of misunderstandings and generally not fully understood even by the librarians whose daily tasks include administering it. To better understand the current status of copyright and its impact on libraries the notion of copyright is briefly outlines, along with what exactly copyright is. Libraries and academic institutions can also influence publishers to adjust their present copyright policies with regard to the reuse of published articles. The expectation is that there will be many digital libraries, most of which will have specialized collections and will be internet worked together in a way loosely resembling today’s Internet. Most digital library project planners are aware there are intellectual property issues that must be resolved in order to successfully deploy their libraries. Some proposals for digital library projects express intent to resolve intellectual property issues as part of the overall plan for the library.

Developing Digital Libraries for Global Children Community with Special Reference to ICDL: Analysis and Evaluation

Books can play an important role in children’s lives. Research has shown that children’s use of books can increase their cognitive, social, and motivational development. In addition, access to narratives from different cultures can offer children opportunities to better understand the world around them as well as who they are in relation to that world. Every day the news media report misunderstandings, intolerance and outright aggression between people from different cultures. Age-old disputes over land, water, religious and cultural practices fuel intolerance. Children absorb the culture and attitudes of their community. Consequently, cycles of intolerance pass from generation to generation. But there is some hope for change: research has shown that sharing personal experiences can change attitudes. Change can happen when children read children’s books from other cultures. International Children’s Digital Library Foundation is the mother organization of the International Children’s Digital Library (ICDL). The mission of the International Children’s Digital Library Foundation is to prepare children for life in an ethnically and culturally diverse world by building the world’s largest online multicultural repository of children’s literature. Present paper attempt to highlights the analysis and evaluation of above mentioned digital library .
Digital Collections: Preservation and Problems

In educational and research institutions, the quantity of digital content created is huge, and libraries at these institutions have a liability to bring this digital material under guardian control in order to manage and preserve it over time. These all have presented challenges and problems to libraries because of the need for special equipment to display items in these formats, obsolescence of this equipment and/or the formats, and the need to preserve the information contained on sometimes fragile storage media. Now the Libraries are working with the DSpace, Greenstone etc (opensource digital repository platform) to explore the problem of capturing research and teaching material in any digital format and preserving it over time. It is a daunting task with few confirmed models, requiring new technology, policies, procedures, core staff competencies, and cost models Problems are not ending; now burning problem is what we should be selected for Preservation for future as this task is not trouble-free. Today the problem of harvesting material on the web and in information centres for preservation and search is a major concern.
