Item Use of E-Journals and E-Databases of UGC-Infonet Consortium by Faculties Members and Research Scholars of Aligarh Muslim University: A Survey(INFLIBNET Center, 2008-02-28) Bharati, M S Z; Zaidi, S MustafaThis paper describes the use of E-Journals and E-Databases (subscribed by UGC-InfoNet consortium) by the users of Aligarh Muslim University. The questionnaire supplemented with interview schedule was used to solicit the opinions of the user group. Nearly 325 responses were gathered and the results are analyzed and presented here with. Besides extensively covering the use of E-journals and E-databases, the paper also examines the utilization and satisfaction levels of users with respect to E-Journals /E-Databases. Use of internet and different search engines as an alternative to the low usage of UGC InfoNet is presented. Lastly, some of the valuable suggestion given by Faculties members and Research Scholars are highlighted.Item Preparing LIS Professional Workforce for Managing Digital Library and Information Centres A Conceptual Framework(Inflibnet center, 2008-02-28) Sinha, Manoj KumarThe manpower is very important aspect in implementing an automated system/computerisation in the library and establishing a digital library for it. The librarian and other library staff play an important role in the process of establishing digital library, networking of digital libraries for information sharing. During the implementation of extending digital library activities, librarian should ensure a proper coordination of the activities in the library. Library professionals should be aware of handling modern technology and electronic gadgets. Therefore technology to awareness of library professionals and their participation in the library automation, networking and digitisation project is important for successful installation of modern system or in organising IT based digital library services. It is equally important that library professionals & staff should have computer knowledge and professional experience. Their involvement in the development of modern digital system is essential for successful implementation. The present paper highlights the concept of manpower planning, definition of human resource development, need of human resource and manpower planning for library activities, continuing education programme (CEP) for LIS professionals, role of various national level library organisations (both Government and associations) for imparting IT training for running modern libraries in network and digital environment. It also highlights the importance of manpower planning and need of trained workforce for implementing the computerised library and information services for the end users. It concludes with some suitable suggestion for further improvement of the system.Item Evaluation of Open Source Content Management System: A Comparative Study(Inflibnet center, 2008-02-28) Sunny, Sanjeev KThere are many web-authoring software like FrontPage, Dreamweaver, etc which have been used to develop and maintain the websites. But gradually, it became difficult to maintain and update the websites because of their very dynamic nature and a variety of file formats. Content Management Systems(CMS) evolved as an alternative to such web-authoring tools. A content management system offers a way to manage large amounts of web-based information that escapes the burden of coding all of the information into each page in HTML by hand. Although the rapid proliferation of commercially available content management systems makes it easier to find a vendor that might have right solution, the cost to purchase a commercial CMS application is very high. As an alternative to commercial CMS, open source solutions are a tantalizing option. Though, there are a huge number of open source CMS available in public domain, it is difficult to decide what solution will work best for a particular organization (or library). A candid discussion and general guideline is provided for the digital library professionals to manage electronic resources with the help of 16 DC metadata elements. This paper at least answers some primarily questions like “What are DC metadata elements?” “What are its characteristics?” “Why they are important and how it is becoming a techno-savvy approach of traditional cataloguing in current scenario?” The paper also examines the relationship between metadata and traditional cataloguing. The main steps for cataloging web resources using Sixteen Dublin Core Metadata elements are explained, and a worksheet is also provided to create DC metadata. DC metadata elements are valuable add-ons for digital library. The overview of Dublin core metadata cannot be complete in such small paper, therefore author limit herself to the most prominent technologies available. However, following the pointers given readers can easily find more information. The school’s aim is to make aware and train the students in latest technologies useful for library science profession, so that they can enter in the today’s job market confidently and apply their professional and technological knowledge effectively and efficiently.Item Use of INDEST and UGC-INFONET E-Journal Consortia: A Comparative Analysis(Inflibnet center, 2008-02-28) Nisha, Faizu; P M, Naushad Ali; Ara, TabassumThe present study explains about INDEST-AICTE Consortium of MHRD and UGC-Infonet Consortium of INFLIBNET, UGC. It examines use of consortium by users of IIT (D) and Delhi University. The study was conducted on a sample of users of IIT (Delhi) and DU. A total number of 120 questionnaires were distributed among the users of IIT (D) and DU libraries, respectively, in the month of December ‘2007’.50 filled in questionnaire were received from IIT (D) users and 50 from DU users. Out of 100 only 90 were chosen for analysis of data and 10 questionnaires were rejected because of incomplete response from the respondents. The results have indicated that majority of users are aware about INDEST and UGC-Infonet Consortia at IIT, Delhi and Delhi University. Most of the users access e-journals and databases through INDEST and UGCInfonet consortia. Slow downloading, lack of maintenance, lack of training, lack of infrastructure and language etc. are the major problems that would discourage users for accessing resources on INDEST and UGC-Infonet. At the end, some suggestions have been provided for enhancing the use of resources available at INDEST and UGC-Infonet.Item Problems and Prospects of College Library Personnel in Bangladesh: an Analytical Study(Inflibnet center, 2008-02-28) Mezbah-ul-Islam, Muhammad; Akter, Rowshon; Sawad bin Shahid, MohammadCollege libraries have significant role in preparation of dynamic future leaders by offering students lucrative services so that users can learn the process of how to enter methods of higher research oriented studies gradually. To do so professional library manpower is a great concern. This study is an attempt to identify the present status of manpower pattern along with providing services of college libraries at capital city Dhaka, Bangladesh and recommended some suggestions regarding the development of library manpower structure. The Study based on primary as well as secondary information and data has been collected adapting questionnaire and interview method. In this juncture, the paper attempts to find out the problems of the building of automated college library services. It is an view that the condition which challenged in libraries of Total Quality Management are very much prevalent here. It is not, however, clear if library managers are effecting the necessary changes to satisfy their clients. In the face of these challenges it is now time for libraries to exhibit that they are valuable to the continued survival and sustenance of their organizations. This can be done best by activity management. Therefore, it is a “system of continuous improvement employing participative management centered on the needs of customers”. Key components of TQM are employee involvement and training, problem solving teams, statistical methods, long term goals and thinking and recognition that the system, not people produces inefficiencies. It is a systematic process, which focuses on understanding customer needs and improving customer services.
