Foremost among the features of the portals is the hypertext link, popularized by the World Wide Web and which will form the basis of a new, highly integrated scholarly literature. Journal integration in this instance seeks to recognize, extend and exploit relationships at the level of journal content–the papers–while maintaining some of the familiar contexts. Links are a powerful tool for journal integration, most immediately in the form of citation linking. The paper defines what knowledge portals are and describes a new system, a link service, which is being developed to support novel and flexible linking mechanisms on the Web. The main aims and objectives of the study and the definitions of citation linking of journal articles and the importance of the citation linking are also discussed in this article with reference to the e-journal Knowledge portal of ACM. The methodology used in the JACM to link the citations is explained with figures.Item Concept of Quality in Library Services: An Overview(INFLIBNET Centre, 2007-12-07) Thakuria, Pranjit KumarThe library services have changed very fast in the last twenty years. The traditional library has now changed to the automated, digital, electronic, hybrid and at present to the borderless library and the conventional education too is been replaced by e-learning. The borderless library has a huge collection of information resources in electronic form which are accessible through the Internet, intranet and extranet. It reduces the geographical restrictions and makes the process of obtaining education and training easy at a reduced cost and time enabling a vibrant user even from a remote area to obtain education and training in his field of specialization or as to the requirement of his profession from the online institutions and universities available in his own country or outside thus paving a significant way towards the global information network.Item Electronic Resources: Highly used Media of Scholary World In The 21st Centuary(INFLIBNET CENTER, 2007-12-07) Kamila, KanchanThe paper highlights about the different types of E-Resources and the role of various consortia to access the same in huge amount in lowest price; some discussion about open source and commercial e-resource; requirements for commercial e-resource management and concludes with the future of open source in the open source vs. commercial e-resource battle.Item Electronic Theses and Dissertations in Tea Science and Technology – Proposal for a Networked Repository of Tea ETDs(INFLIBNET Center, 2007-12-07) Joshi, GovindTheses and dissertations are important knowledge resource created by graduate students in universities or institutes of higher learning. Due to lack of bibliographic control, and restricted access, these grey literature collect dust on shelves of libraries. Hence these are lost to prospective researchers and students to further their studies etc. Although many national and international efforts are being made to collect, collate and distribute theses and dissertations in many forms, none is comprehensive. The present trend is to prepare the theses in electronic form to facilitate easy online access to metadata, abstract and table of content or full text , the theses become OAIPMH compliant and can be searched on internet from anywhere. Depending upon access restrictions the theses can be harvested and stored in any institutional repositories. Indian scenario of theses and dissertations as knowledge resources, and maiden efforts by Tocklai Library in creation of Institutional Repository [IR] of all theses and dissertations in tea science and technology including other aspects are discussed. Proposes for a networked repository of TeaETDs among possible stakeholders in the plan.Item Expert Staff for Digital Resource Management : An Analytical View(INFLIBNET Center, 2007-12-07) Sur, Subrata; Mukherjee, Arup; Sur, Sujata; Dutta, Bratati; Shome, SoumitaInformation Communication Technologies (ICT) are undergoing rapid changes. It is difficult if not possible to maximize the values of this resource without adequate understanding of how to leverage and share knowledge throughout the organization. Knowledge plays an important role in the overall development of intellectual capital of any organization. We are now shifting from information society to knowledge-based society, where we are not so much bothering about the visible or tangible information but deeply thinking about intangible information i.e. knowledge. In this knowledge-based society the main strategic resources are knowledge. And knowledge is the fuel, which is driving today the technology, economy, and the society itself. In this changing context there must have systematic way to capture, process, store and ultimately share knowledge for the development of an organization as well as society. Present Paper attempt to highlight the principles, efforts and barriers of knowledge sharing in Digital EnvironmentItem ICT and Electronic Library: Management and Delivery Within The Traditional Library(INFLIBNET Center, 2007-12-07) Devchoudhary, G BICT plays a crucial role in today’s increasingly globalized world. Libraries are in a process of fundamental change brought about by radical changes in technology. In this state of transition to introduce electronic library services, traditional libraries offer support in the way of personnel, funding, information delivery and management for these electronic libraries. The electronic library is growing fast in parallel to the traditional library. The high rate of growth is dictated by factors outside the library. Libraries are under a lot of pressure to achieve their noble goals much faster than planned, to adopt new technologies, to compete with others in managing the tremendous growth of information and to be able to lead in the area. The management and delivery of information in an electronic library differs from traditional library in many ways. The purpose of this paper is to collect the management and delivery problems arisen out of adoption of the electronic library and to present possible solutions in the areas of five basic parts of scientific management – planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling.Item Implications of Data Mining in Digital Library Environment(INFLIBNET CENTER, 2007-12-07) Mishra, R NData mining, the extraction of hidden predictive information from large databases, is a powerful new technology with great potential to help the Libraries and Information Centers to focus on the most important information in their data warehouses. Data mining tools predict future trends and behaviors, allowing Libraries and Information Centers managers to make proactive, knowledgedriven decisions. The automated, prospective analyses offered by data mining move beyond the analyses of past events provided by retrospective tools typical of decision support systems. Data mining tools can resolve the problems in Libraries and Information Centers especially in a digital environment. Data Mining has become imminent in view of the abundant growth of digital resources for its management, organization, and retrieval and dissemination of the same to the right users instantly to satisfy the varied need of the users due to inter-disciplinary research. Data Mining, Viability of Data Mining, Process involved in Data Mining, etc. have been discussed in this paper.Item Implications of Knowledge Portals on Library InformationServices(INFLIBNET CENTER, 2007-12-07) Laxminarayana, B; Sunil, Adupa; Sudheer, SooraKnowledge Portals provide views on domain specific information the World Wide Web, thus facilitating their users to find relevant domain specific information. In this paper addresses the newly emerging paradigm of scientific knowledge distribution and collaboration. This is based on the particular area of knowledge collaboration in the libraries, academic areas, including knowledge sharing and technology transfer. The proposed views of the Knowledge Portal for the Library Information Services in virtual research, collaborative environments for other areas of knowledge sharing and collaboration. Developing union catalogues of library holdings is one of the core areas in this regard; which has invited attention for a good number of obvious reasons and objectives. Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) programme of the University Grants Commission (UGC) had launched this noble venture of creating a Union Database of university holding of the country. This study is lined up to have a close look on the State-of-the-Art scenario of the university libraries in the NE region of the country towards accomplishing this venture.
