Item Issues in UGC-Infonet E-Journal Consortium(INFLIBNET Centre, 2005-10-10) Devi, Thiyam Satyabati; Murthy, T.A.V.Library consortia for purchasing electronic journals became recognized as a vital part of academic information infrastructure at the research community. The biggest challenge that newcomers to the consortium world face is grasping the fact that standard setting is about giving away rights in technology. Leading institutions in North America and Western Europe take a variety of positive measures to promote consortium activities and formed unique consortia of many kinds. On the other hand, a consortium in India is still in a developing stage and struggle to solve problems they face. The factors that have led to the development of consortia are diverse among countries. This paper describes definitions, aim, organizations, internal structures, policies and other characteristics of the UGC-Infonet E-Journal Consortium which is one of the well known consortia for Higher Education in India under the UGC. It will also highlight the characteristics and issues faced by the consortia and the measures taken up to promote consortium activities.Item Knowledge Management (KM): Conceptual and Theoretical Frame Work(INFLIBNET Centre, 2005-10-10) Mudhol, Mahesh V; M, Purushothama GowdaKM is an important sector of human resource management capturing and managing knowledge requires certain skills. As such, now-a-days, the consortiumbased library purchasing is getting favour. This paper discusses some of the problematic issues in consortium – based library subscriptionItem Consortium of Plantation Crops Research Libraries For Resource Sharing – A Proposal Issues and Facts(INFLIBNET Centre, 2005-11-10) Joshi, Govindnformation explosion resulted from the rapid advances in all scientific fields has made it vital for all scientists to have rapid, easy access to scientific information. However, scientists in developing countries are hampered by the high cost of subscriptions to various journals. Since air-mail delivery is prohibitively expensive, the journals that are received come six to eight months after the publication date, hampering the work of scientists even further. Fortunately, the Internet has come to the rescue. Online journals are available immediately after publication anywhere in the world, with a few clicks of a mouse. Electronic subscriptions are normally cheaper than print subscriptions. Nevertheless, the costs to institutions are still extremely high, particularly in view of the fact that any institution has to subscribe to many journals to meet the varied needs of its scientists. In view of this urgent need, it is proposed that all institutions dedicated to research on plantation crops come together to form a consortium to subscribe to a core group of international journals, available online, that would benefit all members. This would follow the pattern of other consortia such as INDEST, INFONET and INFLIBNET. Experience gained in an initial experiment are focused.Item Scientists Views on Trends in Digital Library In Bangladeh and India(INFLIBNET Centre, 2005-11-10) Singh, Thoudam Shyam; Singh, Ch. For this purpose CORD is conducting three training programmes in an year for the staff and three for the users in this direction.Item Usage of Electronic Journals Under UGC Infonet E-Journal Consortium in North Eastern University Libraries(INFLIBNET Centre, 2005-11-10) Chand, Prem; Murthy, T A V; Chandel, A SThe rapid development of the Internet during the 1990s has opened up a new possibility where traditional print journals are being replaced by, or at least supplemented by, the electronic journals. Low library budget and increasing cost of subscription are some of the important factors for shift from print media to electronic one This paper discusses the role of UGC-Infonet in promotion of E-journals in the country through E-journal consortium. Highlights that the usage of E-journals is much below the expected target by the Universities of North East which have been given access to E-journals. This has been supported by usage statistics by these five universities.Item Building A Digital Library(INFLIBNET Centre, 2005-11-10) Seshaiah, O.The idea of converting library materials into digital format for creating digital collections has advanced rapidly in the last few years, thus leading to the concept of a digital library. A digital library is a library that contains materials in digitized form or access to internal or external digital resources. Digital information resources include not only rapidly growing collection of electronic full text resources, but also images, video, sound, and even objects of virtual reality. The most important component of a digital library is digital collection it holds or has access to. A digital library can have a wide range of resources. A digital library is not a single entity although it may have digital contents created in-hourse or acquired in digital formats stored locally on servers. A digital library may also act a portal site providing access to digital collections held elsewhere. The digital imaging technology offers a number of choices that can be adopted to translate from print to digital. Digital conversion process includes Document, Data Capture, Data Processing, Storage, Indexing and retrieval. Dublin Core standard is adopted internationally to create Meta data of digital resources. The advent of the Internet acted as catalyst for Digital Library initiatives. Digital library environment is the context of rapidly charging computer and communication technology. This paper explains digitization methods, process of digitization and tools required for digitization.Item 25 Years of Electronic Resources Collection Development at the University of Salford: Some Issues and Challenges(INFLIBNET Centre, 2005-11-10) Sandhu, Gurdish; Sale, AnnaThe information landscape is changing rapidly; the reasons for these changes are discussed. Digitization is one of the hot topics in librarianship today. To build a “Digital Library” requires that the content of a collection be available electronically. The rhetoric of the information highway has provided the impetus to convert many existing paper-based (or sound and video) collections into new digital media. Digitization of all categories of materials is now possible with the advances in digital technology. The assumption is that digital collections will be more accessible to a broader range of users, presumable through networking technologies, and that there are new efficiencies to be gained in resource-sharing and for preservation. The topic discuss the concept of Digital library, Component, Technology, Functions and Supporting Format of Digital Library.Item Managing and Handling Electronic Journals : Some Issues(INFLIBNET Centre, 2005-11-10) Bist, Rajender SinghLibraries are moving rapidly towards the electronic method of storage and retrieval. Electronic journals are being added to the Library collections at exponential rates. Today ejournals offer flexibility and recent developments have enhanced the visibility of these by integrating all journal titles in any format. Individual libraries today are facing issues to make these e-journals accessible to users and consortia based subscriptions to e-journals has developed as a viable solution for increased access, with some cost savings. This calls for handling and management of e-journal subscriptions. This paper outlines some of the processes of handling and managing e-journals in individual libraries as well as Consortium.
